15,000 l/m²/sec is a rate, and a rate does nothing on its own. It turns into something only through time — seconds in which the engine is genuinely asking for everything the airbox can deliver. Added up over a year, that total is close to zero on most road motorcycles. The Speed Triple 1200 RS is one of the few sold for the road where it is not: a sharply tuned 1200 triple in a chassis meant to be used on a circuit will spend real, repeated seconds at wide-open throttle in the upper half of the rev range. That is the honest test for the SM221S F1-85 — not what the machine is capable of, but how many of those seconds your own riding actually contains.
Key Features
- Dry polyester weave, single layer, aperture opened out to 85 µm
- 15,000 l/m²/sec, specified for engines held near peak revs session after session
- Free of oil in every state, so nothing can be lifted onto the sensor or the bores
- Roughly double the filtering surface of other performance filters, with the airbox unmodified
- Exchanges directly for the series panel: no cutting, no adapter plate, no remap
- Cleaned between sessions rather than replaced; two-year warranty from the purchase date
Counting seconds rather than horsepower
A useful exercise before ordering: think through a lap or a favourite road and estimate how long the throttle is actually wide open above the middle of the rev range. On a track day with an RS the answer runs to a meaningful share of each lap, repeated across six or seven sessions. On a commute it rounds to nothing. The figure matters because it is the only thing that converts a flow rating into a smaller share of intake restriction — and even then the honest description of the result is a smaller deduction, not extra power. No drop-in element makes a series Speed Triple noticeably stronger.
When the answer is no
If the count comes out low, the standard medium is the better buy and this page should say so. The trade runs both ways: an open weave passes more and holds back less of the fine fraction, a finer one holds more and passes less. A bike that lives on public roads collects its kilometres at modest engine speeds, where the extra capacity earns nothing and the coarser aperture is still working. That is a ranking of use cases, not of quality.
Care and cleaning
Between sessions, compressed air on the clean side blown outwards is enough. After a hard weekend, wash the element in lukewarm water with a mild detergent, rinse until the water runs clear and dry it in open air — never with heat, never near a flame — then refit it dry. The maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab of this page.
