How Öhlins Makes Them

Each spring is set before it is measured, so it will not settle and lose rate in service. Öhlins sets a baseline for each part number on the machine it was developed on, so it works before anything is adjusted. Öhlins winds, heat-sets and then measures every spring individually — the rate on the label is the rate you get.

The Numbers That Matter

The 43.5 mm bore and 445 mm length are the two figures that decide whether it physically fits; 8.0 N/mm decides whether it suits the rider.

What This Rate Does

A middle rate balances support against compliance, which is why Öhlins uses it as the baseline. Rates here suit a solo rider of typical weight on a road-going machine. Mid rates suit a solo rider on a road-going machine with occasional spirited use. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.

Applications

Where Öhlins lists this size against a particular unit, the listing is a starting point rather than a boundary. Rate is the variable that depends on the rider, not on the machine. Two people on the same bike may well want two different numbers. Any workshop with the fork or shock in front of it can answer whether this spring fits — the three figures above are all it needs.

Installation

Oil level is measured from the top of the tube with the fork compressed and the spring removed. Spring preload spacers may need adjusting to keep the installed length correct. Fork oil should be replaced at the same time — it is already out of the leg.

Road Approval

Road approval: not applicable to the spring on its own. Öhlins issues approvals against complete suspension units, not individual springs.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins recommends that its suspension is fitted by an authorised service centre. We are one, and we do the work here: installation, servicing and a proper setup. Ask us and we will include it with the order.
