DescriptionThe whole story▼
The upper rear mudguard sits where nobody looks and does the job nobody thanks it for: it keeps the rear shock, the linkage and the underside of the subframe out of the spray thrown forward by an 18-inch rear wheel. On a bike that is expected to see wet gravel, that is the difference between a shock that still adjusts cleanly after a season and one that does not.
Key Features
- Shields the rear shock body, the spring and the linkage from water, grit and salt thrown up by the rear wheel
- Made in autoclave carbon rather than injection-moulded plastic, so it holds its shape against the heat coming off the rear cylinder
- Bolts to the original mounting points under the subframe — no bracket, no cable ties, no trimming
- Four surfaces available, from a deep clear coat to untreated raw carbon
- Replaces a part that is genuinely exposed, which is why the raw version is popular here: it will get dirty anyway
Heat, Water and What Sits Underneath
This panel lives in the worst microclimate on the motorcycle. It is close enough to the exhaust routing to see real temperature, and it is directly in the line of whatever the rear tyre picks up. Thermoplastic in that position eventually goes soft, sags, and starts rubbing on the tyre. A cured carbon laminate does not creep at those temperatures, so the gap it was built with is the gap it still has three summers later.
There is a maintenance argument too. A rear shock that stays clean is a rear shock whose seals last, and on the DesertX the shock is not a five-minute job to replace.
Fitment and Compatibility
Ducati DesertX, 2022 to 2026, using the original fasteners and mounting positions. Fit it with the rear wheel out or the bike on a stand — access from below is tight with the wheel in place.
Road Approval
No ABE and no EC type-approval number is published by Fullsix for this component. It replaces a non-structural cover; verify the position for your own registration before using the motorcycle on public roads.
Which Finish Under the Tail
There is an honest case for spending the least amount of money here. This panel lives behind the rear wheel, is visible only when the bike is on its stand and you are crouched beside it, and will be permanently coated in whatever the tyre picked up. Raw carbon is the sensible default: lowest price, nothing to chip, and it looks no worse dirty than it does clean.
The counter-argument is consistency. If the front mudguard, the frame covers and the chain guard are all in matt, a raw panel under the tail will read differently on the rare occasions it is seen. Owners building a matched set generally take matt here and accept that the finish is doing no work.
