An XSR 900 from 2022 or 2023 is now at the age where a motorcycle starts meeting people who look closely: a periodic roadworthiness test where the market demands one, a buyer going over it before money changes hands, a workshop seeing the bike for the first time. It is also a model whose owners enjoy changing things, and most intake work leaves something that has to be explained at exactly those moments. The Sprint Filter SM212S leaves nothing to explain. It replaces the paper element inside the original airbox and keeps the housing, the ducting and the fuelling map precisely as Yamaha specified them.
Key Features
- One dry layer of woven polyester, the threads beginning at 22 microns in diameter
- Rated at 80 microns of filtration and 5,050 litres per square metre per second of airflow
- Close to twice the filter area of comparable performance elements, inside the original housing
- Never oiled, so there is no dosing step, nothing to overdo and nothing carried downstream
- Standard airbox, standard mapping, standard emissions behaviour, nothing to declare anywhere
- Washed and blown through instead of thrown away, with two years of warranty from purchase
The modification that is not one
Most of what gets fitted to a naked retro is visible on purpose. This part is the opposite, and that is its value on a bike of this age. Because the element sits in the standard box and no mapping is touched, the intake stays as it was type approved: no altered induction noise, no exhaust reading that shifts at a test, no line in the file when the bike is sold on. Lift the seat and what is there is a factory airbox. The only difference is that the thing inside it will still be there in ten years.
Why this medium and not a finer one
Sprint Filter builds tighter weaves than the P08, and it is worth knowing why they are not an automatic upgrade. A finer medium holds back more and flows less; the P14 nonwoven is rated at 14 microns and 1,800 litres per square metre per second, the T12 at 7 microns and 560. That is a trade, not a ranking, and the ground you ride on decides it. The XSR 900 lives on sealed roads, which is exactly where the P08 balance belongs at 80 microns and 5,050 litres. Nor is that balance careless about what it catches: measured against 100 micron particles the P08 holds 93.13 per cent, where four layer oiled cotton manages 76.42 per cent.
Care and cleaning
Routine care is a compressed air line and a few minutes, worked from the clean face outward so that dirt leaves the medium the way it came in. Twice a year, or after a filthy stretch of road, warm water and a mild washing up liquid can be added, rinsed until it runs clear. What matters afterwards is patience: the element air dries only, well away from heat or any flame, and the SM212S goes back in dry. The care sheet is in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
For the Yamaha XSR 900 of 2022 and 2023. Three machines built around this airbox take the same element, the MT-09 / SP and the Tracer 9 / GT being the others; the full list is in the Fitment tab.
