A Scrambler 1200 gets washed more often than most motorcycles, because it gets dirty in ways a road bike does not. That habit is worth a thought before the airbox lid comes off, since the intake is the one place on a motorcycle where cleaning the outside can put something inside. Water and detergent are part of this element's own service procedure — but on the bench, with the element out, in a controlled order. Aimed at the machine from a metre away under pressure, they are something else entirely.
Key Features
- Single-layer woven polyester, run dry: 80 µm rating at 5,050 l/m²/sec
- Never oiled — no film to reapply after a wash, and nothing to wash off in the first place
- Replaces the paper panel in the standard airbox with no modification and no remapping
- Around twice the working surface of a typical performance element
- Retains 93.13 % of 100-micron particles, against 76.42 % for four-layer oiled cotton
- Washed deliberately, dried and refitted for the life of the machine; two years' warranty
Washable is not the same as weatherproof
Two properties get confused here and they are worth separating. The P08 is washable: dry polyester takes water and mild detergent without harm, which is precisely how it is regenerated when compressed air alone will not do. Water-repellency is a different specification, and in the Sprint Filter range it belongs to the P037, a dry medium rated at 37 microns and built for wet conditions. The PM218S is the standard road-and-track element, cleaned wet when it needs it and refitted bone dry. Nothing about it invites a pressure washer near the airbox intake, and no filter medium ever forgives that.
What it does for a bike ridden on tarmac
It does not make a standard Scrambler 1200 noticeably stronger, and nothing dropped into an unmodified airbox does. The honest benefit is a lower starting restriction that stays low, because the medium is regenerated rather than gradually surrendered. For a machine used the way most of these are used — long road sections with the occasional unsurfaced detour — that is the balanced choice. When the balance really does tip towards dirty air, the same housing takes the finer P14 or the T12, at the usual cost: more retained, less passed.
Care and cleaning
Compressed air on the clean face, driven outwards, so that what the weave stopped leaves the way it came in. If the pleats are still loaded, lukewarm water with a little mild detergent lifts the rest; rinse until the water runs clear. Let it dry in moving air on its own schedule — never with heat, a hot air gun or a flame — and refit it completely dry, with nothing applied to it. The maintenance sheet for the PM218S is in the Downloads tab of this page.
Fitment & Compatibility
The P08 element for the Triumph Scrambler 1200 in XC and XE form, model years 2019 to 2026. Both versions share the airbox: the differences between them are suspension travel, wheels and electronics, none of which sits in the intake tract. It goes into the standard housing in the original position.
