Buying a motorcycle in its first model year means accepting that almost everything on it is new. The chassis is new, the bodywork is new, the electronics have one public season behind them. The airbox is the exception. An old code under a new motorcycle

A first model year has no accumulated experience behind it, and there is usually no way around that. Here there is. The housing arrived with the 790 Duke, carried through the 890, was inherited by the 990 Duke and Duke R, and reaches the RC R unchanged as far as the element is concerned. So the questions that normally take a couple of seasons to answer — does it seat properly, does the lid close on it, does the cleaning routine work in practice — were answered elsewhere, years ago, on machines that are still on the road.

What that is worth, and what it is not

It is worth confidence and nothing more dramatic. A replacement element does not make a standard 990 RC R quicker, and this page will not pretend otherwise; on a machine in this state of tune the intake is not what is holding anything back. The real return is that the resistance the engine works against starts lower than a disposable panel's and can be restored to that figure whenever the box is opened, instead of rising slowly through a season with nothing to show for it on the dashboard.

Care and cleaning

Blow the PM175S through from the clean face outward with compressed air, so what the weave stopped leaves by the route it came. Anything that resists dry cleaning comes out in lukewarm water with a mild detergent; rinse until the water runs clear. Then let it dry fully in moving air. Heat of any kind damages polyester, so no heat guns, no radiators and no flame, and it is refitted dry and untreated. The maintenance sheet lives in the Downloads tab.
