Adventure machines are bought for the ride they might do and used for the ride they actually do. Be honest about the second one when choosing a filter medium, because that is the one the element lives through. For most 800 X Pro owners the yearly total is dominated by sealed road — the commute, the motorway leg out to the interesting part, the ride home in the dark — with the gravel that justified the purchase making up a smaller share than the photographs suggest. The standard 80-micron fabric is specified for exactly that distribution.

Choose for the miles you have, not the ones you plan

The same airbox is catalogued with a 7-micron off-road medium and with a racing fabric, so this is a real choice rather than a default. The off-road mat is the right answer for a machine that genuinely lives in dust — it retains far more of the fine fraction and flows a fraction of what this fabric does, which is the trade in both directions. The racing fabric goes the other way. If the honest answer to how the bike is used is mostly tarmac with some dirt, the medium here is the one that fits, and it is available for the same airbox whenever that answer changes.

What it does and does not change

An air filter fitted inside a standard airbox does not make a standard adventure bike noticeably more powerful, whatever a listing elsewhere might imply. The value is in two smaller and more durable things. First, intake resistance that starts low and, because the element is regenerated rather than left to fill up, stays close to where it started across the whole service interval. Second, a part that comes out, gets cleaned and goes back in — which on a machine that is ridden a long way from home matters more than any dyno figure ever will.

Care and cleaning

Compressed air from the clean face, blown outward, is the routine. Water at hand temperature with a mild detergent and a full rinse deals with anything the air line leaves behind. The PM188S then dries in open air on its own schedule — no heat gun, no flame, no shortcut — and goes back in dry, without oil of any sort. The maintenance instructions are in the Downloads tab.
