DescriptionThe whole story▼
By the last session of a busy practice day, the corners of a motocross track have turned into trenches. Riding a Suzuki RM-Z250 through them means dropping the front wheel into a rut, holding the bike upright on a line barely wider than the tyre and using the clutch to keep a small four-stroke driving where there is no room for error. Accossato's C7220 takes on that job on the RM-Z250 of 2004 and of 2007 to 2020: a clutch lever machined from Ergal 7075, whose long blade can fold on a joint and leaves room for four fingers.
Key Features
- Folding clutch lever for the Suzuki RM-Z250, 2004 and 2007 to 2020
- Not listed by Accossato for the 2005 and 2006 model years
- Mounts at the original clutch perch in place of the stock lever
- Long blade for a four-finger pull
- Anti-break joint allows the blade to fold forward in a crash
- Made in Italy, CNC-milled from solid Ergal 7075
- Black, gold or green blade on a dark base
- No German ABE on file; for motocross use
Construction and Material Quality
Rather than forging or casting it, Accossato machines the C7220 in Italy directly from solid Ergal 7075. That high-strength aluminium alloy is how the company pursues its three aims for the part: strength, low weight and reliability. What arrives is a lever in two pieces. Its dark base locates on the original perch and pivot, and the blade, in black, gold or green, is attached through a joint that lets it fold away. Accossato draws the clutch blade longer than the brake blade so that four fingers fit on it side by side.
Ruts at the End of the Day
A 250 four-stroke needs revs to pull out of a deep rut. Let the engine sag halfway round and the RM-Z250 bogs, the front wheel climbs the wall of the rut and the bike topples at walking pace. Good rut riders therefore brake early and in a straight line, choose their rut before they reach it, pick a gear that keeps the engine lively and let the clutch fill in the gaps: a quick feather to lift the revs as the bike leans, a smooth release as the rut straightens. It is fine work for the fingers while the rest of the body stays still and centred over the bike.
Falls in ruts are usually slow and awkward rather than violent. The bike drops sideways into the trench, often trapping a leg, and the end of the handlebar digs into the rut wall. If it tips to the left, the clutch lever is pressed into firm, packed dirt by the full weight of the machine. The joint on the C7220 gives the blade the possibility of folding forward instead of breaking in that position, so there is a fair chance of dragging the RM-Z250 out, restarting it and still having a clutch for the rest of the session. No lever can be relied on to survive every such fall, but a blade that can move out of the way has more chances than one that cannot.
Fitment and Compatibility
For this clutch lever Accossato names two version groups of the Suzuki RM-Z250: the 2004 model and the bikes from 2007 to 2020. The 2005 and 2006 RM-Z250 are absent from the list, so owners of those years should not count on the C7220 fitting. On the right, the B8262 brake lever covers the whole span from 2004 to 2020, gap years included. Black, gold and green are available on both levers; the brake lever is made in blue as well.
Road Approval
The C7220 has no documented German ABE. It is a part for motocross tracks and off-road competition, which is where the RM-Z250 is meant to be ridden.
