Most of the dust a road-ridden motorcycle swallows is manufactured by the road itself. Brake pads and tyres shed continuously, winter grit leaves a residue that survives long into spring, and a vehicle two lengths ahead lifts all of it back into the air at about the height a naked bike breathes. None of that needs a gravel track or a dry season to happen. It is the ordinary content of a commute, and it is the argument for a finer medium on a 790 Duke that will never leave the tarmac.
Key Features
- Dry nonwoven media rated at 14 µm with a flow of 1,800 l/m²/sec
- Holds its load within the material rather than on a single working face
- Never oiled, so nothing thins in the wet and nothing travels to the throttle bodies
- Fits the standard 790 airbox in place of the paper panel, with no remap
- Blown clean with compressed air and refitted, rather than renewed at each service
- Two years of warranty from purchase, and a working life measured against the machine
The dust nobody rides out to find
Traffic-borne particulate has two awkward properties. It is fine, so the fraction that stays airborne is the fraction a coarser medium is least interested in, and it is continuous, so there is never a moment that registers as dirty. A rider who commutes through a city all year meets more of it than a rider who crosses one dry unsealed road in a summer, and only the second of those two will think to open the airbox afterwards. The P14 is specified for exactly this kind of loading: fine, unremarkable and cumulative.
What the rating is bought with
Retention and rate move in opposite directions, and this medium sits a long way over to one side of that line: it passes 1,800 litres per square metre per second where the standard weave passes 5,050. The reduction is deliberate, permanent and paid on every ride, whatever the air happens to hold that day, which makes the fine rating a specification rather than an improvement. Nor does any of it add power. A standard 790 Duke gains nothing in that direction from a replacement element, and on the A2 version the limit is a licence category that no intake part can approach.
Care and cleaning
Dry service first: an air line at the clean face, worked outward, until the medium stops giving anything up. If the load has gone tacky, lukewarm water with a little mild detergent will shift it, and the rinsing continues until the run-off is clear. The PM175P14 then dries in open moving air for as long as it needs, with no heat gun, no radiator and no flame anywhere in the process, and it goes back into the box untreated. Sprint Filter files the maintenance sheet in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
The P14 element for the KTM 790 Duke and 790 Duke L, 2018 to 2020. Five machines share this code, reaching from the 790 forward to the newest 990s, because the airbox is common to all of them. The identical housing is also catalogued with the P08, the T12 and the racing F1-85; what changes between those codes is the material and nothing else. Order by code and model year; the list is in the Fitment tab.
