Three filtering specifications are catalogued for this airbox, and there is a habit of reading a price list as a ladder of protection. Here that habit points the wrong way round. This element carries the finest rating listed for the Challenger, 14 microns, and it is the cheapest of the three: the 80-micron woven panel asks about half as much again, the 85-micron racing weave a little over three times as much. Price records material and process, not how much a medium keeps out of an engine.
Key Features
- Dry technical nonwoven with a filtration rating of 14 microns
- Flow rated at 1,800 l/m²/sec, against 5,050 for the woven panel in this box
- Supplied dry and refitted dry: there is no oil anywhere in the specification
- Slides into the unaltered series airbox: no trimming, no adapter, no fuelling work
- Roughly twice the filtering area of a conventional performance element
- Serviced and reused for the machine's life, two years of warranty
What a price list can and cannot tell you
Manufacturing explains the order. A fine nonwoven is a mat of fibres made in bulk, while a racing weave must hold a tight, repeatable aperture across every square centimetre, and that precision is what costs. None of it describes air. Ranked by specification, this element sits at one end with 14 microns and 1,800 l/m²/sec and the racing cloth at the other with 85 microns and 15,000; ranked by outlay, those ends swap places. The choice belongs to a third list nobody prints: where the bike is ridden, and what hangs in the air while it is.
Reading the road instead
Fourteen microns at 1,800 l/m²/sec is drawn for air carrying a steady fine load — dry farm roads in late summer, gravel approaches, long stretches behind other traffic. The retention is bought with flow, handed over on every ride whether the dust turns up or not. It is a trade rather than a promotion: a finer structure is not a better filter, only a filter for different air. What none of the three will do is add power. A panel dropped into a standard airbox leaves a standard Challenger exactly as strong as it was. The gain is an intake resistance put back at a cleaning instead of climbing until something is thrown away.
Care and cleaning
Compressed air is the routine, applied to the clean face of the PM237P14 so the load leaves by the way it arrived rather than being driven deeper into the mat. Where damp has bound the dust in place, lukewarm water with a little mild detergent releases it; rinse until the water runs off clear. Then dry in moving air at room temperature and nothing else — heat guns, radiators and flames end a polyester medium long before anything looks wrong. It goes back in dry. Sprint Filter's maintenance sheet is filed in the Downloads tab.
