DescriptionThe whole story▼

When Honda revived the Africa Twin name in 2016, it did so with a parallel twin, a 21-inch front wheel and the clear intention that the bike should leave the tarmac. Many owners take that seriously and fit tyres with a coarse block pattern, which then have to cope with every kilometre of road between one track and the next. The EDF018 from Accossato is a CNC-machined aluminium brake lever for the CRF1000L Africa Twin of 2016 to 2019, with an adjustable reach for a front brake that has to be dosed carefully on such tyres.

Key Features

  • Brake lever for the Honda CRF1000L Africa Twin, 2016 to 2019
  • Listed for manual and DCT versions
  • Fits the original master cylinder
  • Reach adjustable to the grip
  • Short blade for two-finger braking in five colours
  • Standard blade approximately 138 mm in all seven colours
  • CNC-machined aluminium, anodised, black hub
  • No folding joint

Construction and Material Quality

The EDF018 is CNC-machined from solid aluminium and anodised, with a black hub and a blade in the colour of your choice. Anodising makes the colour part of the metal's surface, which suits a bike that is regularly hosed down after dusty or muddy rides. The pivot and the reach adjuster sit in the hub, and from there the blade runs to its tip as one rigid piece. There is no hinge anywhere along it.

Block-Pattern Tyres on Tarmac

An off-road tyre earns its grip in loose ground by letting its blocks dig in. On tarmac the same blocks stand on a smaller contact area, and under hard braking they can flex and squirm. The tyre still stops the bike, but it prefers pressure that builds gradually to a sudden grab, and it tells you through the bars when it is being asked for too much. On the Africa Twin, that makes the first part of the lever travel particularly important. Set the reach so the blade meets your fingers where the hand is relaxed, and practise squeezing in stages: a light initial touch, then more pressure as the tyre takes the load. On wet roads, and on cold mornings before the rubber has warmed, leave an even bigger margin. Two fingers are usually enough on a bike like this, and the short blade, in blue, gold, green, orange or silver, leaves the rest of the hand around the grip.

Fitment and Compatibility

Accossato lists the EDF018 for the CRF1000L Africa Twin from 2016 to 2019 and also names the DCT version of 2016 to 2018 and the Adventure Sports DCT of 2018. On a DCT bike, the right hand brakes exactly as on the manual version, so the lever applies to both. The later CRF1100L is not part of this listing, and Accossato's list has no clutch lever for the Africa Twin.

Road Approval

The EDF018 has no documented German ABE and is sold for use on closed courses.
