A Z900RS tends to be bought as a keeper, and the bikes that get kept are the bikes that get documented: a stamped book, a folder of invoices, a history the next owner will read. That is worth thinking about before fitting a washable air filter, because it changes the paperwork. A replaced paper element leaves an invoice behind with a date and a mileage on it. A cleaned element leaves nothing at all. The Sprint Filter PM165P14 is a dry non-woven filter of 14 microns, made to be washed and put back for as long as the bike lasts — a better part and a worse record. The remedy is not complicated, but it is on the owner: write the date in the service book every time the airbox is opened.
Key Features
- Dry non-woven medium, regenerated with compressed air — no oil anywhere in the process
- 14 microns of filtration at 1,800 l/m²/sec of air flow
- Reusable for the life of the bike instead of replaced at every service
- Roughly double the filtering surface of other performance filters
- Direct replacement in the standard Z900RS airbox — no modification, no remap
- Two years of warranty from the date of purchase
The same engine, a different motorcycle
The Z900RS shares this airbox with the Z900, and very little else about the two bikes lines up. One is a modern naked; the other is an homage to the Z1 of 1972, and it is usually ridden the way it looks — longer routes, smaller throttle openings, a pace chosen for the road rather than against it. That is precisely the use in which 14 microns cost nothing, because the flow the finer medium gives up sits above the part of the rev range this bike normally works in. It is only fair to add that the engine underneath does not know it is wearing 1972 bodywork. Ridden hard in the top third, the RS asks for the air the P08 gives: 80 microns and 5,050 l/m²/sec against 14 and 1,800. Finer means more retention and less flow — a trade with two directions, not a ranking.
What to write in the book
Date and odometer at every clean is the minimum, and it is worth noting which element is fitted, because the next person to open this airbox will find a filter that does not match the description in the owner manual. An unfamiliar part with no history behind it tends to get thrown away and replaced, which is the one outcome this element was bought to avoid. Keep the invoice for the PM165P14 with the rest of the folder. On a motorcycle likely to change hands with its paperwork intact, that entry is the difference between a documented intake and one that merely looks odd.
Care and cleaning
Blow it through with compressed air from the clean side outwards. When it needs more than that, lukewarm water and a mild detergent, rinsed until the water runs clear, then dried fully in air — never with heat and never over a flame — and refitted dry. The maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Made for the Kawasaki Z900RS from 2018 to 2026. The airbox arrived a year earlier on the Z900 and the same PM165P14 element serves both: two machines in total, listed in full in the Fitment tab.
