This is one of the widest price gaps in the whole Sprint Filter range: the racing weave for the G 310 R costs roughly three times its standard element. Not because the racing weave is unusually expensive — it is priced much the same across the catalogue — but because the standard element for this small housing is among the least expensive there is. A ratio, in other words, says as much about the part it is measured against as about the part being bought.

What the difference actually measures

Set against the standard weave for this box, the gain that can be quantified is 2.09 percentage points of retention: 95.22 % against 93.13 %, both taken on the same 100-micron test. That is the honest figure, and it is a small one. Everything else the two elements share — the dry construction, the washing routine, the absence of oil, the two-year warranty. Whether two points of retention justify a threefold price is a decision, and it is easier to make with the number in front of you than with a flow rating that this engine will not use.

Where ratios mislead

On a large-capacity machine the same racing weave sits closer to twice the price of its standard element, simply because that standard element costs more to begin with. Nothing about the medium changed between those two bikes. This is worth keeping in mind whenever a range is compared by multiples rather than by what each part does. And in either case the same sentence applies: in an unmodified airbox this element leaves a standard G 310 R exactly as strong as it was.

Care and cleaning

Blow the PM189S F1-85 out with compressed air from the clean side, working outwards, and the everyday load leaves without any liquid. Lukewarm water with a mild detergent is the second stage, used only when air has stopped working, and rinsed until the water runs clear.
