This XSR 900 is a finished chapter. Yamaha built it from 2015 to 2020 around the 850 cc class triple, and the model that carries the name today is a different machine on a different airbox. That is the quiet problem with owning a superseded generation: the motorcycle is fine, but every consumable slowly becomes a question of who still stocks it. The Sprint Filter P08 PM149S answers one of those questions permanently. It is a dry woven polyester element for the standard airbox, designed to be cleaned and refitted for as long as the motorcycle runs.
Key Features
- Because the P08 medium is dry and never oiled, the intake sensors stay clear of anything carried off the filter
- 80 microns of filtration against 5,050 litres per square metre per second of airflow
- Roughly double the filtering surface offered by other performance filters
- Fits the standard airbox exactly where the original sat — no modification, no remap, homologation intact
- An air line cleans it; it is washable and goes back in again and again
- Two years of warranty, dated from purchase
The last part you buy for it
Paper cartridges are priced as if they were trivial, and over ten years of ownership they are not: each one is a part number to look up, an order to place and a piece of a motorcycle thrown in a bin. On a model that is no longer in production, the looking-up gets slower every year. A washable element ends the sequence. You buy it once, blow it through when the intake note or the mileage suggests it, and the part that was a recurring errand becomes a component of the motorcycle like any other.
Retention is not the thing you give up
Reusable does not have to mean coarser. In Sprint Filter's own comparison the dry P08 retained 93.13 per cent of 100-micron test particles, while a four-layer oiled cotton filter retained 76.42 per cent — and the P08 does it without putting an oil film upstream of the throttle bodies and the intake air sensor. Where conditions genuinely demand more, the range tightens in steps and gives up flow each time: the water-repellent P037 at 37 microns and 4,500 litres per square metre per second, the P14 at 14 microns and 1,800, the T12 at 7 microns and 560. That is a trade, not a ladder. For a road-ridden retro roadster the P08 is the right end of it.
Care and cleaning
Everything about this element is dry, and that governs the service. Compressed air, blown from the clean side outwards, is the normal treatment. If more is called for, lukewarm water and a mild detergent, then a rinse until the water runs clear. After that the element is left in open air until it is dry through — never dried with heat, never near a flame — and refitted dry. There is nothing to oil afterwards; the polyester has never been oiled. The Sprint Filter maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Made for the Yamaha XSR 900 built from 2015 to 2020. The same PM149S element serves six machines built around this airbox, including the FZ-09, the FJ-09, the MT-09 and the Niken 850/GT; the full list is in the Fitment tab.
