This housing is catalogued in three specifications, and they are not three grades of one thing. The Challenger Limited is offered a racing weave at 85 µm and 15,000 l/m²/sec, the standard cloth described here at 80 µm and 5,050, and a fine nonwoven at 14 µm and 1,800. Read down that short list and the two figures move in opposite directions every time: whatever is gained in what the fabric stops is paid for in what it passes.
Key Features
- Single-layer woven polyester, dry throughout its life, filtration 80 µm
- Rated at 5,050 l/m²/sec while the cloth is clean
- Threads from 22 µm in gauge — a fibre measurement, not a mesh measurement
- 93.13 % of 100-micron particles retained; four-layer oiled cotton managed 76.42 % in the same test
- Roughly twice the filtering area of a comparable performance element
- Drops into the standard airbox with no housing work and no fuelling changes, and is washed rather than replaced
What sits on either side
The racing weave is the more open of the two neighbours: 85 µm at 15,000 l/m²/sec, drawn for an engine held wide open where every litre is wanted and the interesting part of the day is short. The dust nonwoven travels the other way, 14 µm at 1,800, drawn for air with something in it worth stopping. Neither is an improved version of what is described here. Each answers a condition its buyer has to be able to name in advance, and where no such condition can be named, the specialisation is paid for in flow or in retention without ever being collected.
Choosing the unspecialised one on purpose
A specialised medium pays only in the condition it was drawn for and charges in every other one, and a medium is chosen once and then lived with for years. A Challenger Limited covering distance on sealed roads, in whatever the season provides, never stays in a single condition long enough to collect on a specialisation. What it will not do is add power — a drop-in element in an untouched box has no mechanism for that — and what it does instead is hold intake restriction low and repeatable right across the service interval.
Care and cleaning
Compressed air handles the ordinary service: applied from the clean face outwards until the weave looks even again, it sends the load back out the way it came rather than driving it deeper. Films that air refuses to move come away with lukewarm water and mild detergent; rinse until the water leaves clear. Then dry slowly in circulating air and nowhere near a radiator, flame or heat gun, since heat damages polyester long before the eye can find it. The PM237S goes back into the airbox dry and bare. Downloads holds the maintenance sheet.
Fitment & Compatibility
For the Indian Challenger Limited, 2020 to 2026. Two more machines of the family are listed against the identical element across the same years, the Challenger and the Challenger Dark Horse, giving three catalogue entries in total. Order by the code and the model year rather than by the equipment name.
