DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 60240-23 is a shock absorber spring rated at 31-40 N/mm, 180 mm long with a 46 mm inner diameter. Rear spring rate sets ride height, static sag and how much of the damper's stroke is actually usable.

Key Features

  • Progressively wound
  • Inner diameter 46 mm
  • Measured spring rate 31-40 N/mm (progressive)
  • Öhlins part number 60240-23
  • Free length 180 mm

Why the Rate Holds

Seals are specified for temperature stability rather than for the lowest unit cost. The finish is applied after setting, which means the coating does not affect the rate. Every unit is dyno-tested against the curve held for its part number, not sampled from a batch.

Dimensions

At 180 mm free length and 46 mm inner diameter, this spring is dimensionally interchangeable with anything of the same size — the rate is what makes it a different part.

What the Rear Spring Decides

Rear spring rate sets ride height and static sag, and those two decide the chassis attitude before any damping click matters. A spring that has settled in service sits shorter than new, which quietly lowers the bike and steepens the steering. The rear spring carries the rider, the pillion and the luggage; the front carries only part of it.

Applications

Öhlins lists no fixed model here — the spring is defined by its measurements, and any fork with matching dimensions can take it. Rate is the variable that depends on the rider, not on the machine. Two people on the same bike may well want two different numbers. Sag figures, not feel, decide whether a rate is right. Öhlins publishes the targets for its own units.

Installation

Rate and preload are separate adjustments: get the rate right first, then set sag with preload. Öhlins states the oil and the air-gap for this application — both are part of the setting, not a detail. Check the free length against the old springs before fitting — a sagged original often measures short.

Road Approval

Road approval: a spring is a like-for-like replacement of a wear part and carries no separate type approval. Where Öhlins states an approval for a particular motorcycle, it is named under Applications.

Fitting and Setup Service

We are an authorised Öhlins service centre, so the installation does not have to be your problem: we fit and set up Öhlins components in our own workshop. Ask us when you order and we will include the work.
