DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 04745-05 is a pair of fork springs rated at 10.5 N/mm, 240 mm long with a 37.5 mm inner diameter. Spring rate is the single largest variable in how a front end behaves, and it is the one thing no damping adjuster can compensate for.

Key Features

  • Supplied as a pair
  • Inner diameter 37.5 mm
  • 140 mm of usable stroke
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Measured spring rate 10.5 N/mm
  • Free length 240 mm
  • Öhlins part number 04745-05

Manufacture and Tolerance

Öhlins sets a baseline for each part number on the machine it was developed on, so it works before anything is adjusted. Service parts stay available for years after a part number leaves the current price list. Every unit is dyno-tested against the curve held for its part number, not sampled from a batch.

Dimensions

At 240 mm free length and 37.5 mm inner diameter, this spring is dimensionally interchangeable with anything of the same size — the rate is what makes it a different part.

Where This Rate Belongs

Heavier riders, two-up use and track days all push the choice towards this end. Support under braking improves; small-bump comfort gives a little back. A firm rate keeps the fork high in its stroke under braking, which preserves the geometry when the front is loaded hard. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.

Applications

There is no model list for this size because the spring is a dimensional part: it fits whatever fork it physically fits. Nothing about the installation changes across a rate range: the mounting, the length and the bore stay the same. Rather than a model list, use the measurements: a fork that accepts this diameter and length is a candidate, and the rate follows from rider weight.

What Fitting Involves

Fork oil should be replaced at the same time — it is already out of the leg. Oil level is measured from the top of the tube with the fork compressed and the spring removed. Fitting is a fork-oil job: the legs come apart, the springs go in, the oil level is set to specification.

Road Approval

Road approval: no separate certificate. The spring changes the rate, not the construction of the fork, and is treated as a service part.

Fitting and Setup Service

We are an authorised Öhlins service centre, so the installation does not have to be your problem: we fit and set up Öhlins components in our own workshop. Ask us when you order and we will include the work.
