DescriptionThe whole story▼

Three point two kilograms off a middleweight, and a torque gain that arrives at 5,570 rpm rather than at the top of the tacho. For a road bike that is the right way round — the FZ8 lives in the middle of its rev range, and that is where this silencer does its work.

Key Features

  • Two kilograms flat, against a standard silencer of 5.2
  • EC type approved, with a separate US EPA approval
  • Carbon fibre outer sleeve and end cap
  • 103.3 PS, read at 10,000 rpm
  • 79.5 Nm, with 3.9 more measured at 5,570 rpm
  • Slip-on: headers and mid-section stay standard

Where the Torque Arrives

Akrapovic records the torque increase at 5,570 rpm and the power increase at 10,000. Almost every silencer in this catalogue puts both near the top; here they are four and a half thousand revs apart, and the lower of the two is the one a rider notices on a road.

3.9 Nm at five and a half thousand on a 779 cc four is roll-on in third gear rather than a number for the dyno printout.

Sixty-One Per Cent

5.2 kg standard down to 2. Yamaha's silencer on this machine is a large steel unit with the catalytic converter feeding it, and replacing it with a carbon can removes more than three kilograms from behind the rider's right leg.

On a 215 kg motorcycle it is not transformative. It is, though, one of the larger proportional savings a plain slip-on achieves anywhere in this range.

Carbon or Titanium

Akrapovic built this slip-on in two versions and says so in its own description: one with a carbon fibre outer sleeve, one in titanium, both with a carbon end cap. This part number is the carbon one.

Carbon is the lighter of the two and it stays black. Titanium takes a heat colour over time, which some owners want and others do not. Neither is more durable in a way that matters over the life of the bike.

Two Names, One Motorcycle

Yamaha sold the naked FZ8 and the half-faired FZ8 Fazer alongside each other from 2010 to 2015. Underneath they are the same machine with the same exhaust, so one part number serves both.

Approved for the Road

EC type approval, and separately a US EPA approval. In Germany that means no entry in the vehicle documents and no discussion at a check. It is a type approval and not an ABE, and the certificate in the box is what proves it.

The Headers Stay Put

This is a silencer only. Yamaha's headers, collector and catalytic converter all remain, which is what keeps the approval intact and the fitting straightforward.

An Ageing Middleweight

The FZ8 was Yamaha's answer to riders who found the FZ1 too much and the FZ6 too little. It sold steadily rather than spectacularly, and the ones still on the road are owned by people who chose them deliberately.

Road Approval

EC type approved, plus US EPA. No entry in the vehicle documents is required.
