DescriptionThe whole story▼
Plenty of levers are bent before the bike ever reaches the trail. A KTM 500 EXC-F spends a surprising part of its life in vans and trailers, strapped down by the bars, leaned on by other machines and wheeled up and down ramps in car parks. Accossato's B8283 is a folding front brake lever for the 500 EXC-F from 2014 to 2022. It is CNC-machined in Italy from Ergal 7075, and its joint lets the blade tip forward when the bike falls onto it, on the trail or in transit.
Key Features
- Folding brake lever for the KTM 500 EXC-F, model years 2014 to 2022
- Replaces the stock lever on the original front brake master cylinder
- Joint allows the blade to fold forward under impact
- Shorter blade for three fingers
- Made in Italy from solid Ergal 7075 aluminium alloy
- Dark base; blade in black, blue or orange
- No German ABE documented; for off-road use only
Construction and Material Quality
Strength, low weight and reliability are the three goals Accossato names for its off-road levers, and the material follows from them. The B8283 is cut on CNC machines from solid Ergal 7075, an aluminium alloy with considerably more strength than the common grades. The machining is done in Italy. Two parts result: the dark base, which holds the pivot, and the blade in black, blue or orange. A joint links them, and on this brake lever the blade is kept short, with room for three fingers.
Loaded, Strapped and Unloaded Again
Think about how the 500 EXC-F travels. It is pushed up a ramp, often by one person, with the front brake held to stop it rolling back. It is strapped down at the handlebar, where hooks and buckles sit close to the controls. On a rough road, the bike beside it leans in. At the destination it comes down the ramp again, and one misjudged step sends it over onto the tarmac. None of this is riding, yet all of it can bend a lever.
A few habits help. Use soft loops round the bar instead of hooking straps near the controls, leave space between bikes and wheel the 500 down the ramp with someone steadying the rear. When something still goes wrong, the construction of the B8283 plays its part. The blade can fold forward on its joint instead of bending or breaking at the tip, which may save a drive home for a spare. It will not survive everything, but a lever that gives way is less likely to end the weekend before the first special test.
Fitment and Compatibility
Accossato lists the B8283 for the KTM 500 EXC-F from 2014 to 2022, fitted in place of the original brake lever. Owners of 2012 and 2013 bikes are covered on the clutch side only: the C7283 folding clutch lever is listed from 2012 to 2022. The two levers share black, blue and orange; red is a clutch-lever colour only.
Road Approval
The B8283 has no documented German ABE. It is intended for off-road riding and competition, and on a road-registered 500 EXC-F it is not approved for public traffic.
