A Corner That Is Also a Coupling

Because the bore is exactly fifty, the end of this bend accepts a fifty millimetre pipe directly. On a system built in that size, a corner and a joint become the same component — no separate sleeve, no butt weld, and one less thing to align.

It is a small saving on a single corner and a real one on a run with four of them.

Rare in a Catalogue

Fifty-two is a size most suppliers skip. Bending it requires its own mandrel and its own die, and the volume does not justify the tooling for anyone building to round numbers.

Spark keeps it because its own systems use slip joints throughout, and a slip joint needs a female half. That decision at the factory is what puts the article in the catalogue.

The centreline radius of a production bend is set by what the tooling can form without distorting the section, and it grows with diameter. A fifty-two millimetre bend therefore sweeps wider than a forty-millimetre one at the same angle — something to allow for when the run has to clear a shock or a footrest hanger.

Thirty degrees is a correction rather than a corner. On a large-capacity machine with a long run to the silencer it is usually the last piece: the collector points one way, the mount is somewhere else, and a shallow lean reconciles them.
