Most of the things an owner is tempted to do to a new Vitpilen 801 alter what the motorcycle is declared to be: an exhaust, a calibration, an open intake kit. Each has to be squared with type approval, the warranty and whoever insures the bike. Replacing the element inside the standard airbox belongs to a far shorter list. Housing, sealing face, intake mouth and fuelling all stay exactly as Husqvarna specified them; what changes is the material of the panel inside. PM283S is dry woven polyester, washed and refitted rather than bought again.
Key Features
- Woven polyester run dry: no oil to apply, none to travel downstream
- Filtration 80 microns, flow 5,050 litres per square metre per second
- Polyester threads from ø 22 microns — a thread diameter, not a mesh width
- Filtering area roughly double that of other performance filters
- Standard airbox, seal and calibration: nothing is opened up or recut
- Covered by a two-year warranty from purchase
An internal specification, not a modification
The distinction is not a quibble. This airbox is a homologated component, shaped for the intake noise it is permitted to make as much as for the air it has to pass, which is why cutting into it or swapping it for an open filter is a different kind of decision altogether. The element inside is a service item, listed as one in the owner's manual, and fitting a different element of the same dimensions is something the manual already anticipates. No fuelling change is required and the path from the mouth of the airbox to the throttle bodies is untouched.
What you actually get for it
Not power. A panel filter inside an unmodified airbox does not make a standard 801 noticeably stronger, and anything written to the contrary is selling something. The return is duller: a restriction that starts lower and, more to the point, stays low, because the material is cleaned rather than consumed. Dry polyester across roughly twice the filtering area of other performance filters returns close to its published figures every time it is washed, instead of drifting away from them until the next service. Sprint Filter designs it to last the life of the motorcycle — a claim about cleaning cycles, not horsepower.
Care and cleaning
Compressed air first, aimed through from the clean face outwards so the load is pushed back the way it arrived. Once air has stopped making a difference, wash the element in lukewarm water with a mild detergent and rinse until nothing more comes away. Then leave it to dry in air alone, well away from radiators, heat guns and naked flame, and refit it only once it is dry through. Nothing is oiled afterwards. Sprint Filter's maintenance instructions for PM283S are in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Made for the Husqvarna Vitpilen 801 built from 2024 to 2026. The element covers three machines: the Vitpilen 801, the Svartpilen 801 and the KTM 790 Duke, which has used this airbox since 2022. The Fitment tab carries the full list, and the part number is what to order by — the badge on the tank does not identify the filter.
