Six cylinders in a row, and one panel feeding all of them. A twin hands its airbox a gap between intake events; the in-line six of the K 1600 overlaps them so closely that the pull at the filter face is nearer to a steady draw than to a set of pulses. That is the load PM187S lives in for the length of a GT's service life — not spikes to survive, but a demand that hardly lets go. Sprint Filter's answer is a dry woven polyester panel that drops into the standard housing and is emptied with air instead of thrown away.
Key Features
- A single dry layer of woven polyester, supplied unoiled and refitted unoiled after every wash
- An 80 µm aperture rated at 5,050 l/m²/sec, Sprint Filter's road and track specification
- Polyester threads from ø 22 microns across; the opening left between them is a separate figure
- Retention quoted at 93.13 per cent of 100-micron test particles
- Close to twice the filtering cloth of a typical performance panel, held in the original frame
- Occupies the paper element's seat with nothing cut, no adapter and no remapping
Six draws through one opening
A four-cylinder engine gives its airbox a rhythm; a six with this firing spacing gives it something much closer to a continuous request. Two consequences follow. The dust load arrives spread over the whole face of the element rather than gathering where a pulse happens to land, so the panel fills evenly. And whatever restriction the cloth is offering at any moment is the restriction the engine meets, without pause. A medium whose resistance climbs as it loads is therefore climbing all the time — which is the behaviour a washable element takes out of the equation.
What actually changes
Not the power figure. A panel dropped into an untouched airbox does not make a series K 1600 noticeably stronger. What changes is the shape of one consumable's life. Paper is at its most open on the day it goes in and closes from there until it is discarded, with no way of reading how far along it has got. Woven polyester comes out at a service, is blown clear and goes back doing what it did when new, for as many services as the motorcycle still has ahead of it.
Care and cleaning
Ordinary servicing of the PM187S is compressor work: hold the nozzle to the clean face and push the load back out through the side it came in by. Where a long summer has left a film that air alone will not lift, lukewarm water and a little mild detergent will, rinsed until the water leaves clear. Drying is the slow part and the one that can be got badly wrong: moving air only, never a heat gun or a flame, since heat is what finishes polyester. The panel returns dry and stays unoiled. The maintenance sheet is filed under the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Listed for the BMW K 1600 GT built from 2010 to 2019, seated in the unmodified series airbox. The GT carries the longest span of the four listings on this element: the same part number covers its first model year and its last. Four machines from the K 1600 family share the panel, each with its dates under the Fitment tab.
