The fine end of a short range

Coverage in a parts catalogue follows testing and volume rather than need, so the absence of a finer element for the 959 is not a judgement about the motorcycle. It does decide the shape of the choice, though. On this bike the step from the standard 80 µm panel down to 37 µm is the only step available, and there is nothing beyond it to move up to later. Worth knowing before buying, because it makes this a decision taken once rather than the first of several.

What 37 µm costs and what it returns

It costs throughput. The published rate is 4,500 l/m²/sec against the 5,050 of the standard weave, which is the trade every filter makes: finer holds more back and passes less. It returns finer filtration and a cloth that resists wetting, which is why the catalogue files it under wet and demanding conditions. What it does not return is power. The 959 is not faster for having a finer weave in front of it and R127S-WP-AVIO makes no such claim. The real gain is an intake resistance that stays where it started, because the element is cleaned back instead of left to fill.

Care and cleaning

Compressed air, clean side, outward: that is the whole of the ordinary service and it suits a dry medium. If a film has bonded to the weave, hand-warm water with a mild detergent will release it, and the rinse continues until the water leaves without colour. Then the drying, which is the step that decides how long the cloth lasts — ambient air only, for however many hours it wants, with nothing warm assisting. Refit it dry and bare.
