What a Trumpet Is

The name is literal. The body runs straight and cylindrical for most of its length, then steps out at the shoulder into a short, wide cone that ends in a large, straight-cut mouth. Look at the pair from behind and you are looking down two open bells.

It is the oldest shape in British motorcycling and Spark has not modernised it. There is no tapered tip, no rolled edge, no carbon cap — the outlet is simply a circle of AISI 304 with the metal left visible at the cut. On a T120, which wears its twin silencers high and level along the flanks, that mouth is the part of the exhaust an onlooker actually sees.

Half the Weight, and It Comes Off the Sides

The factory silencers and their pipework weigh 7,1 kg. Spark's pair weighs 3,7. The 3,4 kg difference sits low and outboard on both flanks of the motorcycle, which is the mass a rider notices when pushing the bike off its side stand or turning it around in a yard.

It is not a figure that will change lap times, and Spark does not claim it will. On a 1.200 cc modern classic it is the difference between an exhaust you are aware of and one you are not.

Approved, With the Converter Retained

The Euro 4 type approval was released by the Italian Ministry of Transport, and it covers the silencers fitted the way Spark supplies them: on the standard catalytic converter, which stays on the motorcycle.

That distinction matters when the vehicle is inspected. Nothing is removed from the emissions path — the slip-ons replace what is downstream of the converter and leave the converter alone.

Scotch-Brite, Not Chrome

The stainless is finished with Scotch-Brite, the fine directional grain that leaves the surface satin rather than mirrored. Against the chrome header pipes of a T120 it reads as the deliberately quieter of the two metals, and it does not throw the hard highlight that polished steel does in a photograph or in low sun.

Practically, a brushed finish also forgives. Fingerprints and light road film wipe off; the surface does not show every mark the way chrome does.

Where Spark Puts the Gain

Spark places the improvement in the middle of the rev range rather than at the top. On a 1.200 cc parallel twin that is the honest place to claim it — a T120 makes its torque early and is ridden there, and an exhaust tuned for high rpm would be working in a part of the range the engine barely uses.
