DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 21211-03 is a shock absorber spring rated at 18-27 N/mm, 230 mm long with a 46 mm inner diameter. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every click a compromise.

Key Features

  • Inner diameter 46 mm
  • Powder-coated chrome
  • Progressively wound
  • Free length 230 mm
  • Öhlins part number 21211-03
  • Measured spring rate 18-27 N/mm (progressive)

How Öhlins Makes Them

The wire is progressively wound where the application calls for it and straight where it does not. Production is Öhlins' own in Sweden, and the tolerance on the rate is what separates these from a generic replacement. Öhlins publishes recommended sag figures for its springs, so the setup has a reference rather than a feel.

Dimensions

The 46 mm bore and 230 mm length are the two figures that decide whether it physically fits; 18-27 N/mm decides whether it suits the rider.

How a Rear Spring Works

Adding a pillion or luggage changes the rear load enough that the standard rate stops working properly. Two riders 20 kg apart on the same motorcycle genuinely need different rates, not different clicks. The rear spring carries the rider, the pillion and the luggage; the front carries only part of it.

Applications

A workshop will pick this spring from its dimensions and the rider's weight, not from a fitment table. Öhlins lists no fixed model here — the spring is defined by its measurements, and any fork with matching dimensions can take it. A spring is one of the few suspension parts that is genuinely interchangeable: same bore, same free length, and it goes in.

Fitting

If the fork has not been serviced recently, bushes and seals are worth replacing while it is apart. Öhlins supplies a setting sheet with the springs; the numbers on it assume the specified oil. Oil level is measured from the top of the tube with the fork compressed and the spring removed.

Road Approval

Road approval: a spring is a like-for-like replacement of a wear part and carries no separate type approval. Where Öhlins states an approval for a particular motorcycle, it is named under Applications.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins suspension rewards careful fitting. We recommend having the work done by an authorised Öhlins service centre — and we are one ourselves: we fit, service and set up Öhlins components in house. If you would like us to handle the installation, just ask and we will quote it with the order.
