Two days out on unmade roads, what matters in an air filter is not how fine it is but whether it can be brought back. A paper panel travels one way only: it collects, it restricts, and eventually it must be exchanged for a new one that has to exist somewhere within reach. The six machines listed against this element all come from the GS and HP2 side of the boxer range, and they are ridden in the places where that somewhere is furthest away.
Key Features
- Polyester special non-woven, used dry, closing to 7 microns
- Rated at 560 l/m²/sec, the lowest flow figure and the finest material Sprint Filter publishes
- Holds its load in the depth of the mat rather than on a tighter mesh
- Carries no oil at any stage, so nothing can be drawn onto the sensors
- Sits in the standard airbox in the paper panel's place: no cutting, no adapter, no remap
- Brought back with air and water instead of replaced, two years of warranty
Recovery without a parts counter
Compressed air stands at almost every fuel station in Europe and a good many outside it; water and mild detergent are available everywhere. Between them they return PM109T12 to a known condition wherever the machine is parked. The one real cost is time, because the mat must be completely dry before it goes back in: on a warm afternoon an hour or two, on a cold wet evening a decision taken the day before. Planning around drying time is a smaller problem than planning around a part that is not in the country.
Seven microns, and the half nobody advertises
Finer means more held back and less passed through. That is a trade rather than a ladder, and the numbers show its size: the standard weave for this airbox is rated at 5,050 l/m²/sec through an 80 µm aperture; this one passes a rated 560 through 7 µm. What the exchange buys is the fine mineral fraction, small enough to walk straight through a coarse weave. What it does not buy is performance: nothing dropped into a series airbox makes a standard boxer noticeably stronger, and a fine medium least of all.
Care and cleaning
Air first, at the clean face and directed outward, worked slowly across the panel — a non-woven holds its load through its thickness, and a blast from the dirty side simply packs it deeper. When a stage leaves more than air will move, lukewarm water with mild detergent lifts it out, rinsed until clear. Drying is by moving air alone: no heat gun, no engine heat, no flame, each of which finishes a polyester element far faster than dust ever will. It goes back dry. The Sprint Filter maintenance sheet is filed under the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
For the BMW R 1200 GS Rally built from 2012 to 2018, seated in the unmodified series airbox. Six machines carry this number and all six come from the GS and HP2 side of the range: the HP2 Enduro, the HP2 Megamoto, the R 1200 GS with its HP2 and Adventure versions, and the Rally. The standard weave for the same housing covers fifteen machines, so the short list here is about ground rather than fit. Each entry is named with its years under the Fitment tab.
