Two cylinders, one airbox. Every intake event on the 890 is served by the same element, which means the part was never sized for what one cylinder wants but for the sum of both, and that sum arrives in pulses rather than as a steady draw. There are only two ways to let a filter pass more: open the weave, or use more of it. The P08 takes the second route, which is why the interesting number here is not the mesh but the area folded into a standard housing.
Key Features
- 80 µm of filtration, 5,050 litres per square metre per second of flow
- Single layer of woven polyester, used dry and oiled at no stage
- Answers demand with surface — about twice that of a usual performance element
- A single code covers the 890 Duke, the learner-legal L and the R
- Sits in the standard airbox exactly as the original panel did, with no remapping
- Regenerated rather than replaced, and covered for two years from the purchase date
Surface instead of a wider mesh
Opening the holes is the cheap route to a flow figure, and it is charged directly to retention: everything that used to be caught between the old opening and the new one now goes through, on every stroke of both cylinders, for the whole life of the element. Adding medium costs nothing in filtration at all. It costs packaging space, which is the reason it is only available to a maker willing to pleat a great deal of cloth into a housing someone else designed. On a twin that empties its box twice per revolution, the difference between those two approaches is not a debating point.
Three machines on one line
The L is the A2 version, the R the sharpest of the three, and Sprint Filter groups them because the airbox does not tell them apart. Neither does an honest description of the element. No standard 890 gains power from one, whichever of the three it is, and the restricted variant is held by a legal category that sits far below anything a filter could argue with. The gain is a lower intake resistance at the start and, because the medium is washed instead of discarded, the same low figure again after every clean.
Care and cleaning
Servicing the PM175S is a bench job with an air line. Hold the air to the clean side and drive it outward; the dust leaves the way it came in. A wash belongs later in the element's life — lukewarm water, a mild detergent, rinsed until nothing further comes away. Polyester is spoiled by heat, so it dries in open air alone, well away from any flame, and it is refitted only once it is dry the whole way through. The maintenance sheet is filed under Downloads on this page.
Fitment & Compatibility
For the KTM 890 Duke, 890 Duke L and 890 Duke R, 2020 to 2026, replacing the standard panel in an unaltered airbox. This code covers five machines across the family, from the 790 up to the newest 990s, so the model year decides the order as much as the model name. The complete list sits in the Fitment tab.
