DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 00180-58 is a shock absorber spring rated at 72 N/mm, 180 mm long with a 46 mm inner diameter. Rear spring rate sets ride height, static sag and how much of the damper's stroke is actually usable.

Key Features

  • 90 mm of usable stroke
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Inner diameter 46 mm
  • Measured spring rate 72 N/mm
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Free length 180 mm
  • Öhlins part number 00180-58

Manufacture and Tolerance

Öhlins manufactures in Upplands Väsby, north of Stockholm, and assembles and tests every unit there before it ships. Rates are offered in defined steps, so a change can be made in one direction at a time. Service parts stay available for years after a part number leaves the current price list.

The Numbers That Matter

Dimensionally this is a 46 mm × 180 mm spring; within that envelope Öhlins offers a range of rates, and this one is 72 N/mm.

Choosing 72 N/mm

This end of the range suits heavier riders, two-up use, or a machine ridden hard enough that fork dive becomes the limit. Support under braking improves; small-bump comfort gives a little back. A firm rate holds the chassis attitude when the front or rear is loaded hard. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.

Rate and the Linkage

A shock absorber spring carries the whole rear of the machine through a linkage that multiplies its rate several times over — which is why the number on the spring looks so much larger than a fork rate. Preload adjusts sag within a rate; it does not change the rate, and no amount of it will rescue a spring that is wrong. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the rear load enough that the standard rate stops working properly.

Applications

Öhlins builds springs to dimensions rather than to model lists, so the question is always the same: does the diameter fit, does the length fit, and is the rate right for the rider? Ask us with the machine and rider weight and we will tell you which rate in this size to take. Öhlins offers rates in defined steps so a change can be made in one direction at a time rather than by guesswork.

Installation

A spring that is the correct length still needs the preload spacer checked, since installed length is what sets sag. Preload spacers usually need shortening or lengthening so the installed length stays correct. Note the original oil level before draining — it is a useful reference even when Öhlins specifies its own.

Road Approval

Road approval: a spring is a like-for-like replacement of a wear part and carries no separate type approval. Where Öhlins states an approval for a particular motorcycle, it is named under Applications.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins components deliver what they promise once they are fitted and set up properly. As an authorised Öhlins service centre we do exactly that in house — installation, service and setup. Simply ask if you would like us to take care of it.
