DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 06452-06 is a shock absorber spring rated at 70 N/mm, 220 mm long with a 61 mm inner diameter. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every click a compromise.

Key Features

  • Free length 220 mm
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Öhlins part number 06452-06
  • 115 mm of usable stroke
  • Inner diameter 61 mm
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Measured spring rate 70 N/mm

How Öhlins Makes Them

Öhlins winds, heat-sets and then measures every spring individually — the rate on the label is the rate you get. Öhlins publishes recommended sag figures for its springs, so the setup has a reference rather than a feel. Each spring is set before it is measured, so it will not settle and lose rate in service.

Dimensions

At 220 mm free length and 61 mm inner diameter, this spring is dimensionally interchangeable with anything of the same size — the rate is what makes it a different part.

Where This Rate Belongs

If the suspension bottoms out or the geometry collapses under load, this is the direction to go. A firm rate holds the chassis attitude when the front or rear is loaded hard. A firm rate keeps the fork high in its stroke under braking, which preserves the geometry when the front is loaded hard. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.

Rate and the Linkage

Because the linkage is progressive on most modern machines, a small change in rate moves the sag more than riders expect. A shock absorber spring carries the whole rear of the machine through a linkage that multiplies its rate several times over — which is why the number on the spring looks so much larger than a fork rate. A spring that has settled in service sits shorter than new, which quietly lowers the bike and steepens the steering.

Applications

The safest way to choose is by static sag: set the target figure, and the rate follows from whether you can reach it with preload. Sag figures, not feel, decide whether a rate is right. Öhlins publishes the targets for its own units. Öhlins offers rates in defined steps so a change can be made in one direction at a time rather than by guesswork.

What Fitting Involves

Fork oil should be replaced at the same time — it is already out of the leg. The fork legs come off, the springs are swapped and the oil level is reset — half a day in most workshops. Both legs are done together, and both take the same rate.

Road Approval

Road approval: a spring is a like-for-like replacement of a wear part and carries no separate type approval. Where Öhlins states an approval for a particular motorcycle, it is named under Applications.

Fitting and Setup Service

This is not a part to rush. Öhlins recommends installation by an authorised service centre, and we are an authorised Öhlins service centre — fitting, servicing and setup all happen here. Get in touch if you would like the work done with the order.
