DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 01096-89 is a shock absorber spring rated at 30 N/mm, 190 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. A rear spring matched to rider and load keeps the chassis attitude where the factory intended it.

Key Features

  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Free length 190 mm
  • Öhlins part number 01096-89
  • Inner diameter 57 mm
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Measured spring rate 30 N/mm
  • 110 mm of usable stroke

How Öhlins Makes Them

Shafts are hardened and surface-treated so the seal has a consistent surface to run against. Anodising is hard-coat rather than decorative, which matters on a component exposed to road salt and stone chips. Machining, anodising, assembly and testing all happen in the same building rather than across a supply chain.

Size and Rate

Free length 190 mm, inner diameter 57 mm, rate 30 N/mm — those three figures define the part completely.

Where This Rate Belongs

Rates in this range suit lighter riders and machines that spend their time on real roads rather than smooth circuits. A softer rate keeps the tyre loaded on a poor surface, which is worth more than outright support on most roads. The trade is fork dive under braking — noticeable, but rarely the limiting factor on the road. A road machine spends most of its life in the first third of the fork's travel — that is the part the rate governs.

How a Rear Spring Works

A rear spring is the cheapest part of the suspension and the one that decides the most. A shock absorber spring carries the whole rear of the machine through a linkage that multiplies its rate several times over — which is why the number on the spring looks so much larger than a fork rate. Öhlins sells rear springs separately precisely because rider weight varies more than machine weight does.

Applications

Nothing about the installation changes across a rate range: the mounting, the length and the bore stay the same. Rate is the variable that depends on the rider, not on the machine. Two people on the same bike may well want two different numbers. This spring is chosen by its dimensions rather than by motorcycle model: check inner diameter, free length and rate against the fork it is going into.

Fitting

Any suspension workshop can fit these; the fork does not need to leave the bike for long. Note the original oil level before draining — it is a useful reference even when Öhlins specifies its own. Torque the fork caps to the manufacturer's figure; the springs change nothing about the assembly torque.

Road Approval

Road approval: no separate certificate. The spring changes the rate, not the construction of the fork, and is treated as a service part.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins recommends that its suspension is fitted by an authorised service centre. We are one, and we do the work here: installation, servicing and a proper setup. Ask us and we will include it with the order.
