DescriptionThe whole story▼

The rear caliper lives in the worst place on a motorcycle. Everything the back tyre picks up is thrown straight at it, and on a wet ride the disc spends the whole journey coated in a film of water and road dirt. Accossato covers the rear wheel of the Ducati Panigale 1299 Superleggera of 2017 with the AGPA42, and this article is the Sintered material, a compound the firm associates with a grip level that holds steady at high and low disc temperatures and that continues to work when the face is wet.

Key Features

  • Rear brake pads for the Ducati Panigale 1299 Superleggera, model year 2017
  • AGPA42ST: the AGPA42 carrier pressed with the Sintered material
  • Accossato promises consistent grip hot or cold, and in the wet
  • For the dirtiest position on the bike, behind the rear wheel
  • Two pads to a box, the pair for the rear caliper
  • A single rear caliper means one box does the axle
  • OR and ZXC are also listed on this carrier
  • No German ABE held; supplied for racing and closed circuits

Construction and Material Quality

Predictability is the property Accossato advertises here, and at the back of a motorcycle predictability counts for more than force. The pedal is worked with a boot rather than with fingers, so the feedback is coarse to begin with, and a compound whose behaviour shifts with temperature or moisture makes a rider stop trusting it. Accossato says this one does not shift much either way. The carrier is the AGPA42 used for every material in this group, so the only thing that changes when an owner of a 1299 Superleggera switches compound is the working face.

Grit, Spray and the Caliper at the Back

A wet ride leaves evidence. Fine grit works its way into the gap between pad and carrier, road film dries on the disc as a dull grey layer, and salt from a winter road goes everywhere the spray can reach. None of it stops a brake working, but over a season it is what turns a smoothly sliding caliper into a sticky one, and a sticky caliper wears one pad twice as fast as the other while the rider notices nothing at the pedal.

The remedy is a bucket and ten minutes. Rinse the back of the machine with plain water after a wet outing, aim nothing at high pressure into the caliper, and let everything dry before a cover goes over it. When the wheel is out for a tyre, take the chance to clean around the pads and to check that they move in their seats. Keep chain lubricant off the disc of a 1299 Superleggera by shielding it with a piece of card while you work, because an oily rear disc takes several firm applications to recover and the pedal will feel wrong until it has.

Fitment and Compatibility

This rear article belongs to the 1299 Superleggera of 2017 as Accossato has listed it, and to nothing else in the range; the standard 1299 and the 1299 S are separate entries. Up front, the same machine is covered by the AGPA106 for that season. The company offers no brake disc for the Superleggera. There is one caliper at the rear, so a single box equips the axle, and the pair inside it is fitted together rather than one at a time.

Road Approval

For the AGPA42ST we hold no German ABE and no test paperwork. We therefore list the pads for racing and closed-course use, and make no statement about their suitability for public roads.

Scope of Delivery

Two AGPA42 pads in the Sintered material in one box, the complete set for the rear caliper of a Panigale 1299 Superleggera.
