DescriptionThe whole story▼

Sand is a specialised sort of unpleasant. It works its way between pad and disc, turns a brake into grinding paste and takes no notice of how new anything is. Riders who spend an afternoon taking a Scrambler 800 through a gravel pit or along a dry riverbed are asking the back brake to work in that soup all day. Accossato presses the AGPP91 in the Off-road sintered material, article AGPP91STMX, and lists it plainly as the compound it makes for riders who leave the tarmac. The rear entry opens in 2017.

Key Features

  • Rear pads for the Ducati Scrambler 800, 2017 to 2025
  • AGPP91STMX: the AGPP91 shape in Accossato's dirt compound
  • Made for riders who leave the tarmac rather than for commuting
  • For sand, ruts, dust and the abrasive mess that comes with them
  • Listed for the 803, the Cafe Racer to 2020 and the Desert Sled to 2023
  • Two pads in the box, the set for the single rear caliper
  • The identical shape is also pressed in OR and ST
  • No German ABE on file; supplied for competition

Construction and Material Quality

The description Accossato gives this version is short, and it is about terrain rather than temperature: the firm presses this material for riders who go beyond surfaced roads. That is worth taking literally. A rear brake in sand is not being asked for power so much as for stamina, since a steady stream of abrasive keeps passing between the friction face and the disc. The plate is the usual AGPP91, identical to the one beneath the road versions, so a set can go in for a weekend in the dirt and come out again afterwards. Slow wear is what the company claims across its pads, and a day in a gravel pit is the quickest way to put that to the test.

A Day in the Gravel Pit

Loose ground rearranges a rider's habits. The front lever becomes something to use carefully and the right foot does most of the talking, tapping the pedal into ruts, holding a steady drag down a bank of shale, locking the wheel deliberately to bring the back of the bike round on a tight turn. That happens hundreds of times between breakfast and the ride home, and each one draws another handful of dust through the caliper.

Cleaning is part of the ride rather than an afterthought. Get the worst off while it is still damp, pull the wheel out if the day was genuinely filthy, and look over both friction faces for embedded stones before they carve the disc. Check the pedal for travel, since a hard day moves fluid around and can disguise a low set. Keep every kind of spray off the disc face, and press the pedal firmly a few times before the Scrambler 800 goes out again.

Fitment and Compatibility

The rear listing for this shape covers the 803 from 2017 through to 2025. Two body styles sit inside that span with shorter runs of their own, the Cafe Racer to 2020 and the Desert Sled to 2023, while Accossato's front-wheel article for the same machine is the AGPA177 with cover reaching 2026. One box is what a rear caliper takes. On the disc side the catalogue lists the DK008 and the DKS074 against this Scrambler 800. Choosing a dirt compound changes none of those dates, so a bike from another season still needs its own lookup.

Road Approval

No ABE and no German test certificate for the AGPP91STMX has been supplied to us, so the pads are catalogued for competition and closed-course use only.

Scope of Delivery

One box holding two AGPP91 pads in the Off-road sintered material, the set for a single rear caliper on the Scrambler 800.
