The Vulcan shares an airbox with a sports tourer and a naked bike, which is the only reason a racing filter medium is listed for a cruiser at all. The case against it is worth making before the case for it. The Sprint Filter P08 F1-85 flows 15,000 l/m²/sec through an 85 micron weave, where the standard P08 flows 5,050 through 80 microns — and the two halves of that trade do not apply to the same part of the rev range. The flow becomes useful where the engine is asking for everything it can get. The coarser weave filters everything, all the time, including the long low-rpm hours a cruiser is actually ridden in.
Key Features
- 85 microns of weave in a dry polyester racing medium, rated at 15,000 l/m²/sec
- For reference, the standard P08 sits at 80 microns and 5,050 l/m²/sec
- No oil anywhere in the element, so nothing travels downstream onto the sensors
- Filtering area about double what other performance filters provide
- Drops straight into the standard airbox: no modification, no remap, no change to homologation
- Washed and used again rather than thrown away; two years of warranty from purchase
An advantage bound to a rev band, and a cost that is not
The Vulcan's version of this 650 twin is tuned for the bottom half of its range, and the riding position finishes the job. Intake flow only becomes the limiting term at wide throttle high in the rev range, which is a corner of the map this motorcycle visits rarely and lives in never. Whatever the weave lets through, it lets through at idle in traffic and at a steady cruise on a Sunday alike. So the advantage of this element is conditional and its cost is unconditional — which is the clearest reason to put a road-going Vulcan on the standard P08 instead, or on the P14 if it spends its life in city air.
Where the five microns actually show
Measured against 100 micron particles the two media look close, and the F1-85 even reads slightly higher at 95.22 percent against 93.13 percent for the P08. That particle is far coarser than either weave, so both stop nearly all of it. The difference opens up below their own aperture, in the narrow band of dust small enough for one to pass and the other to catch. Fine mineral dust is exactly the fraction that survives as far as a cylinder wall. In absolute terms it is a modest difference — but on a motorcycle bought to be ridden gently for a long time, modest and permanent outweighs conditional and occasional.
Care and cleaning
Between rides the PM163S F1-85 is cleaned with compressed air, from the clean side outwards. If that is not enough, lukewarm water and a mild detergent, rinsed until the water runs clear. Dry it completely in open air — never with heat, never over a flame — and put it back dry. There is no oiling step. The maintenance sheet sits in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Made for the Kawasaki EN 650 Vulcan / S, 2015 to 2026. The same element serves five machines built around this airbox, across the Vulcan, Ninja, Z650 and Versys families; the complete list is in the Fitment tab.
