The XSR 700 is one of the most rebuilt motorcycles of its decade. Tanks, seats, subframes, lights, exhausts and paint all get changed, and somewhere in every one of those projects there is a moment where the airbox comes up for discussion. It is bulky, it sits exactly where a builder wants a flat line under the seat, and removing it is the single change most likely to leave the bike running worse than it started. Keeping it is usually the right decision — and the Sprint Filter P08 CM148S is what goes inside it when the rest of the bike has been reconsidered.
Key Features
- No oil film upstream of the sensors, because the dry P08 polyester is never oiled
- Filtration at 80 microns and an airflow of 5,050 litres per square metre per second
- Roughly double the filtering surface other performance filters offer
- The standard airbox stays in use — standard fuelling, standard intake noise, no remap
- Washable and reusable, and serviced with nothing but compressed air
- Made to last the life of the motorcycle
The part that stays standard
Open pod filters look the part and change the pressure the engine is tuned around, which is why so many builds that fit them end up needing fuelling work to get back to where they were. A filter element inside the standard housing changes none of that. The airbox volume, the intake path and the resonance stay as Yamaha calibrated them; only the medium is different. For a bike that is being modified everywhere else, having one system that stays known is worth a great deal when something else on the build needs diagnosing.
Nothing on the outside, everything on the maintenance
The visible parts of an XSR usually get more attention than the airbox, and that is exactly the problem: the element that has never been looked at is doing the same work as the parts that get polished. A dry, washable filter changes the relationship. It is inspected because inspecting it costs nothing, cleaned with an air line and put back, and it does not become a purchase every service. On a bike that owners tend to keep for a long time and rebuild more than once, a part designed to last the life of the motorcycle simply outlives several versions of the motorcycle itself. It will not add power to a standard engine — what it adds is a lower and repeatable intake restriction, and one less consumable.
Care and cleaning
On a bike where everything else has been reconsidered, this part stays simple. Compressed air travels through the element from the clean side outwards; where that leaves something behind, a wash in lukewarm water with a mild detergent finishes the job, rinsed until the water runs clear. Open air dries it fully — heat and flame never do — and it is refitted dry, with no oiling step at any point. The Sprint Filter maintenance sheet is filed under Downloads.
Fitment & Compatibility
