DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 00698-21 is a shock absorber spring rated at 75 N/mm, 230 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. The damper can only control the spring it is given; the wrong rate makes every click a compromise.

Key Features

  • Inner diameter 57 mm
  • Free length 230 mm
  • Measured spring rate 75 N/mm
  • 107 mm of usable stroke
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • Öhlins part number 00698-21

How Öhlins Makes Them

Machining, anodising, assembly and testing all happen in the same building rather than across a supply chain. Two units carrying the same part number behave the same way out of the box, which is the whole point of testing each one. Production has stayed in Sweden since the company was founded in 1976.

The Numbers That Matter

Free length 230 mm, inner diameter 57 mm, rate 75 N/mm — those three figures define the part completely.

What This Rate Does

This end of the range suits heavier riders, two-up use, or a machine ridden hard enough that fork dive becomes the limit. Firm rates trade some small-bump comfort for support — the right trade on a good surface at speed. Firm rates also suit machines carrying luggage as a matter of course. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.

How a Rear Spring Works

A shock absorber spring carries the whole rear of the machine through a linkage that multiplies its rate several times over — which is why the number on the spring looks so much larger than a fork rate. Two riders 20 kg apart on the same motorcycle genuinely need different rates, not different clicks. Rear spring rate sets ride height and static sag, and those two decide the chassis attitude before any damping click matters.

Applications

Where Öhlins lists this size against a particular unit, the listing is a starting point rather than a boundary. There is no model list for this size because the spring is a dimensional part: it fits whatever fork it physically fits. Öhlins offers rates in defined steps so a change can be made in one direction at a time rather than by guesswork.

Installation

Once fitted, ride the machine before making damping changes: the new rate alters what the clicks do. The fork legs come off, the springs are swapped and the oil level is reset — half a day in most workshops. Öhlins states an air gap for this application, and that figure is part of the setting rather than a detail.

Road Approval

Road approval: a spring is a like-for-like replacement of a wear part and carries no separate type approval. Where Öhlins states an approval for a particular motorcycle, it is named under Applications.

Fitting and Setup Service

Fitting matters as much as the part. We are an authorised Öhlins service centre and carry out installation, servicing and setup ourselves — get in touch and we will arrange it alongside your order.
