DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 00596-08 is a shock absorber spring rated at 48 N/mm, 270 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. A rear spring matched to rider and load keeps the chassis attitude where the factory intended it.

Key Features

  • Inner diameter 57 mm
  • Powder-coated yellow
  • 151 mm of usable stroke
  • Öhlins part number 00596-08
  • Free length 270 mm
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Measured spring rate 48 N/mm

How Öhlins Makes Them

Every unit is dyno-tested against the curve held for its part number, not sampled from a batch. Öhlins publishes recommended sag figures for its springs, so the setup has a reference rather than a feel. Öhlins machines its own critical components instead of buying them in, and the tolerances are where the money goes.

The Numbers That Matter

Free length 270 mm, inner diameter 57 mm, rate 48 N/mm — those three figures define the part completely.

Where This Rate Belongs

Mid rates suit a solo rider on a road-going machine with occasional spirited use. Rates here suit a solo rider of typical weight on a road-going machine. From here it is easy to move one step in either direction once you have ridden it. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.

Rate and the Linkage

Static sag at the rear sets the whole chassis attitude — get it wrong and the front geometry goes with it. The rear spring carries the rider, the pillion and the luggage; the front carries only part of it. Öhlins supplies most of its shocks without a spring precisely so the rate can be matched to the rider rather than averaged.

Applications

Öhlins builds springs to dimensions rather than to model lists, so the question is always the same: does the diameter fit, does the length fit, and is the rate right for the rider? There is no model list for this size because the spring is a dimensional part: it fits whatever fork it physically fits. A workshop will pick this spring from its dimensions and the rider's weight, not from a fitment table.

Fitting

Preload spacers usually need shortening or lengthening so the installed length stays correct. Both legs are done together, and both take the same rate. Öhlins states the oil and the air-gap for this application — both are part of the setting, not a detail.

Road Approval

Road approval: no separate certificate. The spring changes the rate, not the construction of the fork, and is treated as a service part.

Fitting and Setup Service

Fitting matters as much as the part. We are an authorised Öhlins service centre and carry out installation, servicing and setup ourselves — get in touch and we will arrange it alongside your order.
