DescriptionThe whole story▼

Öhlins part number 01092-84 is a shock absorber spring rated at 200 N/mm, 170 mm long with a 57 mm inner diameter. Adding a pillion or luggage changes the load enough that the standard rate stops working.

Key Features

  • Free length 170 mm
  • Inner diameter 57 mm
  • 68 mm of usable stroke
  • Öhlins part number 01092-84
  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Measured spring rate 200 N/mm
  • Powder-coated yellow

How Öhlins Makes Them

Anodising is hard-coat rather than decorative, which matters on a component exposed to road salt and stone chips. Service parts stay available for years after a part number leaves the current price list. Materials read unremarkably on paper — aluminium, steel, nitrogen — and the difference lies in how precisely they are made.

Dimensions

Öhlins holds the free length at 170 mm and the inner diameter at 57 mm across this rate range, so moving up or down a rate changes nothing about the installation.

What This Rate Does

Support under braking improves; small-bump comfort gives a little back. Heavier riders, two-up use and track days all push the choice towards this end. Firm rates also suit machines carrying luggage as a matter of course. Road surfaces are the hardest test of a spring rate, because the fork has to cope with both a smooth stretch and a broken one.

Rate and the Linkage

Static sag at the rear sets the whole chassis attitude — get it wrong and the front geometry goes with it. A spring that has settled in service sits shorter than new, which quietly lowers the bike and steepens the steering. Preload adjusts sag within a rate; it does not change the rate, and no amount of it will rescue a spring that is wrong.

Applications

This spring is chosen by its dimensions rather than by motorcycle model: check inner diameter, free length and rate against the fork it is going into. Rate is the variable that depends on the rider, not on the machine. Two people on the same bike may well want two different numbers. The safest way to choose is by static sag: set the target figure, and the rate follows from whether you can reach it with preload.

Installation

Check the free length against the old springs before fitting — a sagged original often measures short. Note the original oil level before draining — it is a useful reference even when Öhlins specifies its own. Fork oil should be replaced at the same time — it is already out of the leg.

Road Approval

Road approval: not applicable to the spring on its own. Öhlins issues approvals against complete suspension units, not individual springs.

Fitting and Setup Service

Öhlins components deliver what they promise once they are fitted and set up properly. As an authorised Öhlins service centre we do exactly that in house — installation, service and setup. Simply ask if you would like us to take care of it.
