DescriptionThe whole story

Öhlins part number 08789-34 is a pair of fork springs rated at 3.4 N/mm, 423 mm long with a 38.2 mm inner diameter. This is the change a suspension technician makes first, before touching a single click.

Key Features

  • Straight-wound, constant rate
  • Öhlins part number 08789-34
  • Supplied as a pair
  • Inner diameter 38.2 mm
  • 280 mm of usable stroke
  • Measured spring rate 3.4 N/mm
  • Free length 423 mm

Why the Rate Holds

Every Öhlins dealer can re-valve the unit, because the shim stack is a documented, serviceable assembly. Machining, anodising, assembly and testing all happen in the same building rather than across a supply chain. Two units carrying the same part number behave the same way out of the box, which is the whole point of testing each one.

Size and Rate

Free length 423 mm, inner diameter 38.2 mm, rate 3.4 N/mm — those three figures define the part completely.

Where This Rate Belongs

A very soft rate uses more of the stroke, which is usually what an off-road chassis wants. A rate this low belongs on a long-travel machine or under a light rider — it lets the fork use its full stroke instead of riding high and skating over the surface. Rates at this end are for long travel, light riders, or machines that need the wheel to follow the ground rather than skip over it. Ride quality on the road is decided by rate first and damping second.

Applications

Rate is the variable that depends on the rider, not on the machine. Two people on the same bike may well want two different numbers. There is no model list for this size because the spring is a dimensional part: it fits whatever fork it physically fits. Any workshop with the fork or shock in front of it can answer whether this spring fits — the three figures above are all it needs.

Fitting

The fork legs come off, the springs are swapped and the oil level is reset — half a day in most workshops. Öhlins states an air gap for this application, and that figure is part of the setting rather than a detail. A spring that is the correct length still needs the preload spacer checked, since installed length is what sets sag.

Road Approval

Road approval: springs are not separately type-approved in Germany because they substitute a part that is already homologated with the fork. Model-specific documents, where they exist, are named above.

Fitting and Setup Service

This is not a part to rush. Öhlins recommends installation by an authorised service centre, and we are an authorised Öhlins service centre — fitting, servicing and setup all happen here. Get in touch if you would like the work done with the order.
