Between Two Categories
MV gave the Brutale's triple long-travel suspension, a high seat, wide bars and folding footrest tips, and produced something that is not quite a supermoto and not quite a naked bike. It sold in small numbers and delighted almost everyone who rode one.
Folding Peg Tips
A detail that reveals the intent behind the whole motorcycle: MV expected the Rivale to be ridden hard enough to touch its footrests down and designed for that eventuality. Whoever drew it had spent time on a supermoto.
Wide Bars, Different Geometry
The upright position puts the hands further apart and higher than on a Brutale, which brings the thumb to the cluster from above rather than from behind. Machined relief between the controls works from that angle where a printed symbol the rider cannot see does not.
Three Model Years
The Rivale appeared in 2014 and was withdrawn by 2017 during a range rationalisation. Short production runs are normal for MV; what makes this one notable is how favourably it was received by the few people who tried it.
Universal Clamp Pattern
The plate accepts both master cylinder geometries, which keeps a brake change or a set of protective guards from forcing the switch to be reconsidered. On a bike with this narrow a parts supply, flexibility is worth having.
Scarce Components
Small production and no successor mean very little was ever made specifically for the Rivale. A switch engineered for it rather than adapted from the Brutale is worth taking when one is available.
Three Anodised Finishes
Black, red and titanium, converted into the surface rather than applied. On a motorcycle as visually busy as the Rivale, black is generally the calmer choice for the cockpit.
