DescriptionThe whole story▼

Twenty grams saved, ten minutes to fit. Those two numbers together describe this part completely, and the second one is the interesting half — this is among the quickest jobs in the whole Akrapovic catalogue, and it is entirely within reach of an owner with a set of allen keys.

Key Features

  • 80 grams against the standard shield's 100
  • Ten minutes of workshop time
  • Hand-crafted carbon fibre, replacing the factory shield
  • Covers both the naked F 900 R and the faired F 900 XR
  • Made for the Akrapovic Slip-On Line on these machines

Twenty Grams, Honestly Stated

BMW's own shield here already weighs only 100 grams, so there was very little to remove. Anyone expecting the 300-gram savings that some Akrapovic shields achieve on other bikes will be disappointed, and it is better to say so at the top of the page than to leave it to the specifications.

The reason the saving is small is that BMW did a decent job. Some manufacturers fit a heavy pressed shield here; this one is already light.

Two Very Different Motorcycles

The F 900 R is a naked roadster and the F 900 XR a half-faired sport tourer, and they feel nothing alike to ride. Underneath they share the 895 cc parallel twin, the frame and the exhaust route, which is why one shield covers both.

On the R it is fully exposed; on the XR the fairing takes some of the attention away from it. The part is the same and where it shows is not.

Ten Minutes

Among the shortest fitting times Akrapovic quotes. Two or three fasteners, the old shield off, the new one on, and there is nothing to torque to a critical figure and nothing to adjust.

What It Is Honestly For

Appearance. A woven carbon panel next to a titanium silencer looks like part of the same design; a painted metal one looks like the part BMW had to fit.

It also stays black. The standard shield chips where stones reach it and the exposed edge marks, which on a motorcycle ridden through winters shows within a couple of seasons.

It Belongs to the Slip-On

Akrapovic designed this shield around its own silencer for the F 900. On the standard BMW exhaust the mounting geometry is different, and the visual point of a matched part disappears anyway.

The Shield Is Not the Silencer

Worth separating the two, because they are often confused. The silencer changes the sound, the weight and the approval; the shield changes none of those. Fitting one without the other gives a motorcycle with a carbon panel bolted to a factory exhaust, which is neither better nor worse but is not what most buyers have in mind.

Seven Model Years

BMW has built the F 900 R and XR since 2020 without changing the silencer position or the shield mounts, so one part number covers the whole run so far.

Hand Crafted

The cloth is laid into a mould by hand, cured and trimmed. That is where the cost sits on a part this small — not in the material, but in the number of times a person handles it.

Road Approval

Not applicable. A heat shield is neither an emissions nor a noise component. What the motorcycle may do on the road is decided by the silencer behind it.
