DescriptionThe whole story▼

Sooner or later every enduro rider meets a bog that swallows the rear wheel. The usual way out on a heavy bike such as the Husqvarna FE 501 is to get off and walk beside it, engine running in first gear, while one hand steers and the other feeds the clutch in small doses. Accossato's C7284 is the folding clutch lever listed for the 2017 FE 501, CNC-machined in Italy from Ergal 7075. Its long four-finger blade gives the walking hand plenty to hold, and a joint lets it fold forward if the bike slumps over.

Key Features

  • Folding clutch lever for the Husqvarna FE 501, 2017 model year
  • Takes the place of the stock lever at the original clutch mount
  • Long blade for four fingers
  • Anti-break joint lets the blade fold forward
  • CNC-machined in Italy from solid Ergal 7075
  • Blade in black, blue or orange
  • No German ABE documented; off-road and competition use

Construction and Material Quality

Accossato builds the C7284 from two machined parts rather than one: a dark base, which fits the pivot at the FE 501's original clutch mount, and a blade in black, blue or orange that is held by the joint and can fold forward from it. Each part is CNC-milled in Italy from solid Ergal 7075. That high-strength aluminium alloy gives Accossato what it is after in an off-road lever, namely strength, low weight and reliability. The blade has the long clutch shape, with room for four fingers.

Walking It Out

The technique looks odd but works. Standing beside the bike on firmer ground, the rider holds the bars, keeps the engine running just above idle and eases the clutch out a little at a time, so the rear tyre turns slowly enough to find grip instead of digging. As the bike creeps forward, the rider walks with it, pushing at the same time and ready to pull the lever in the moment the tyre starts to spin. On a big four-stroke like the FE 501, this is far less tiring than trying to ride out and sinking deeper.

The risk is that the bike falls away from the rider, towards the soft side, and lands on the clutch lever with the engine still running. Standing beside it, the rider cannot always catch it. In mud the lever usually lands softly, but a hidden root or stone under the surface is enough to snap a solid blade. The C7284's joint gives the blade the option of folding forward, and once the bike is lifted it can be set back in place. It will not rescue every situation, but losing the clutch in the middle of a bog is one problem fewer.

Fitment and Compatibility

The C7284 is listed for the Husqvarna FE 501 of 2017 only, and it takes the place of the standard lever at the original clutch mount. Riders of the 2014 to 2016 FE 501 need the C7283 instead. The front brake lever, B8283, is listed for every FE 501 from 2014 to 2017, and it and this clutch lever are both offered in black, blue and orange.

Road Approval

No German ABE has been documented for this lever. The FE 501 can wear a number plate, but with the C7284 fitted it is not approved for public roads; the lever is meant for off-road and competition use.

Scope of Delivery
