A filtration figure only applies to the air that goes through the medium. Air that slips past the edge of the element, or under a lid that is not seated, is not filtered at 85 microns or at 80 — it is not filtered at all. On a bike whose box is opened once a year that is a detail. On an RC 390 it is not: this is the model here most likely to have its bodywork off and its box open several times a season. The P08 F1-85 flows 15,000 litres per square metre per second against the P08's 5,050, at a weave opened from 80 microns to 85, and every one of those numbers assumes a perfect seal.
Key Features
- Dry polyester racing weave rated 85 µm and 15,000 l/m²/sec
- Sits on the original sealing face in the standard airbox — no adapters, no trimming
- Oil-free, so the sealing edge stays clean and nothing is carried forward
- Roughly double the filtering area of a comparable performance element
- Cleaned with an air line and refitted the same afternoon; two years of warranty
- A racing part — for road use on an RC 390 the P08 is the better specification
The half of the job that is not the medium
Two things filter the air here: the element, and the joint around it. The joint gets no rating printed on a box, and it is the one that suffers from being disturbed. An element refitted slightly proud, a corner trapped under the lid, a clip left unlatched — each opens a path that bypasses the weave, and no medium is fine enough to make up for it. A dry element helps, because the box spends less time open: nothing soaks and nothing waits to dry, so what comes out goes back the same hour.
Which weave the RC 390 should have
A road-registered RC 390 collects most of its distance on public roads, and that is where the step from 80 microns to 85 is paid for: the wider mesh passes the band between the two on every ride, whatever the throttle is doing. The extra flow only appears at the very top of the range. No drop-in element makes a standard motorcycle faster in any case; the honest benefit common to all of these filters is an intake restriction that starts low and is reset by washing instead of being replaced. If the bike is a road machine that visits circuits, the P08 delivers that with the finer weave. The F1-85 is the specification for one that lives at the circuit.
Care and cleaning
The PM200S F1-85 wants compressed air on its clean face, worked outward, so the load leaves by the side that collected it. When air alone stops clearing it, lukewarm water with a mild detergent will, rinsed until clear. Drying is done in open air and never hurried with heat or a flame, and the element returns to the box only when the weave is dry throughout — then check that the lid seats squarely. The maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
For the KTM RC 390, 2022 to 2026, taking the place of the original in the unmodified airbox. Thirteen KTM and Husqvarna machines share this code, the track-only RC 390 R included, so order by the code and the year rather than the model name alone. The list is in the Fitment tab.
