Ask which Sprint Filter is best for an F 850 GS Adventure and the honest answer is that this range has no top. The names on the media are destinations, not grades: road and track, dusty conditions, wet conditions, off-road and extreme, racing. This element carries the last of those, and on a motorcycle built for long, loaded distance the word does more work in the imagination than it does inside the airbox. Worth taking apart, because the racing version is the dear one.
Key Features
- Dry polyester in the racing weave — no oil when new, none after cleaning
- An 85 µm opening at 15,000 l/m²/sec, the highest rated flow in the Sprint Filter programme
- Around twice the filtering area of other performance filters, carried in the standard frame
- Fits the series airbox in place of the paper element; nothing cut, nothing remapped
- Serviced with air instead of bought again, for as long as the motorcycle is kept
- Two years of warranty from the date of purchase
What the extra outlay buys
Roughly two and a half times the price of the standard P08 in this fitment, and the difference purchases one property: the ability to pass air. Not longer life — both media are specified to last the motorcycle. Not a cleaner intake in the small sizes, where the racing cloth is deliberately the more open of the two. Capacity, and nothing besides. It is spent at wide-open throttle high in the rev range, while a loaded Adventure with luggage and a pillion spends its day at high load and moderate revs, which is not the same condition. Load fills the cylinders; engine speed decides how many times a second they are filled, and it is the second figure that sets the demand on the cloth.
Reading the labels as a map
Each medium in the programme is a fixed exchange between what is held and what passes through: a 7 µm off-road cloth flows 560 litres per square metre per second, a 37 µm wet-weather medium 4,500, the road-and-track P08 5,050, this racing medium 15,000. No arrow runs through that list pointing at better. If the Adventure's year is long distances on sealed roads and one service at the end of it, the road-and-track specification is the one written for the job. If it is made of closed circuits, timed sessions and a maintenance clock counted in hours under load, PM188S F1-85 is the one written for that. Both are the same dry, washable polyester; the aperture and the price differ.
Care and cleaning
Cleaning is a compressor and some patience. Air goes onto the clean face and pushes outward; a wash follows only once air has stopped being enough, in lukewarm water with a mild detergent, rinsed until it runs clear. Dry it in open air and nowhere else — never over a heater, never with a flame, never in a hurry — and put it back only when it is dry through. Sprint Filter's maintenance sheet is in the Downloads tab.
Fitment & Compatibility
Listed for the BMW F 850 GS Adventure from 2017 to 2026, seated in the standard airbox. Nine machines take the same racing element — the BMW middleweight F models and the Kove 800 X Pro — and the Fitment tab names each.
