The Niken was never going to be built in the numbers an MT-09 is. A leaning three-wheeler with two front wheels is a machine for a small, deliberate group of riders, and that has a practical consequence years later: hardly any dealer keeps its service parts on a shelf. Owners of low-volume models learn to think in lead times. The Sprint Filter P08 PM149S removes one line from that list entirely — it is a dry polyester element that is washed and refitted instead of replaced, so the intake side stops being something you have to source.
Key Features
- Nothing in the P08 medium is oiled at any point, which keeps the intake sensors clear of transferred film
- 5,050 litres per square metre per second of flow, with the weave filtering at 80 microns
- Filtering area is about double what other performance filters provide
- A straight swap into the standard airbox: no cutting, no remapping, no change to homologation
- Reusable for as long as you keep the machine; compressed air is the routine service
- Two years of warranty run from the purchase date
A rare motorcycle on a common part
The front end is what makes this machine unusual; the engine bay is not. The Niken and the Niken GT share their airbox with five other machines in this family, which is why the same PM149S element covers all six. That is worth knowing when you own something built in small numbers: the part you need is not a Niken part, it is a platform part, and platform parts stay available long after a niche model leaves the price list. Sprint Filter design this element to last the life of the motorcycle in any case, which turns the supply question into one you only ask once.
Two front wheels, one air path
A Niken is usually ridden the way it was bought — long days, real distances, weather taken as it comes rather than waited out. That is a duty cycle measured in hours of airflow, not in dry-weather Sundays, and a filter ages by the volume and the quality of the air that has passed through it rather than by the reading on the odometer. Two riders can arrive at the same service interval with elements in completely different states. With a washable element the answer is not a shorter interval but an inspection you can act on the same afternoon, wherever you happen to be.
Care and cleaning
The Sprint Filter maintenance sheet in the Downloads tab covers this in full, and it is a short list. Compressed air from the clean side outwards handles the normal case. Where the element has taken on more than air will shift, lukewarm water with a mild detergent works, followed by a rinse until the water runs clear. Drying happens in open air and nowhere else — not with heat, not over a flame — and the element has to be completely dry before it is refitted. At no stage does anything get oiled; the polyester is dry by design.
Fitment & Compatibility
Made for the Yamaha Niken and Niken GT, 2018 to 2026. The same PM149S element serves six machines built around this airbox, including the FZ-09, the FJ-09, the MT-09 and the XSR 900; the full list is in the Fitment tab.
