The R1250GS Adventure carries the ShiftCam boxer, thirty litres of fuel and BMW's combined throttle-and-switch assembly. The JP CO BM018 replaces the last of those with milled Ergal.

The Heaviest Thing BMW Calls Agile
Fully fuelled, the Adventure is close to 270 kilograms, and the remarkable thing about it is how little that shows once it is moving. The telelever front end and the low crankshaft do most of the work. What the weight does affect is what happens when the bike stops being upright, which is where the handlebar furniture becomes relevant.
A Cockpit Used for Hours at a Time
Riders cover 800 kilometre days on these motorcycles. Over that distance the right hand operates the cruise control, the heated grips, the mode selection and the display repeatedly, often through thick gloves. Precision in those controls is not a refinement; it is what stops a long day becoming an irritating one.
Milled Rather Than Moulded
The original assembly is injection moulded and clipped together. This one is cut from a single billet of Ergal 7075, with the switch block and the throttle housing forming one body. There are no seams for water to enter and no clipped joints to develop play under the boxer's low-frequency vibration.
Unlettered by Choice
The alternative version has GS milled into the side. This one is plain. On an Adventure that is already covered in the visual language of long-distance travel, an unmarked component in the cockpit tends to look more purposeful than a branded one.
What the Original Costs to Replace
Because the switches and the throttle housing are one BMW part number, a single failed contact means buying the complete assembly from a dealer. Once that is understood, the price difference between the factory part and a milled aluminium replacement becomes much smaller than it first appears, and the durability difference does not.
