The V4 Granturismo
Ducati replaced the Testastretta with a 1158 cc V4 using conventional valve springs rather than desmodromic actuation. The service interval went to 60.000 kilometres, which changed the ownership case entirely.
A Hundred and Sixty-Eight Horsepower
More than the twin and considerably smoother, with a rear cylinder bank that deactivates at idle to keep heat off the rider. It is an engine designed around comfort as much as output.
Lighter Than the Twin
The V4 came in thirteen kilograms below the 1260 despite the extra cylinders. Ducati redesigned the chassis around the new engine rather than adapting the old one.
Housing, Not Switch
This replaces the throttle assembly and nothing else. The switch block stays, which makes it the sensible purchase when only the moulded plastic is the objection.
A Sensor in the Bore
The grip's rotation is read electronically. A machined bore keeps that reading consistent, which on an engine with this much low-rev torque is worth more than it sounds.
Black Anodised
Converted into the metal rather than laid over it. The Diavel already carries a great deal of exposed machined aluminium and a matching finish sits naturally with it.
Ergal 7075
An aerospace grade at roughly twice the strength of ordinary machined aluminium. It does not deform when a heavy motorcycle is dropped at low speed, which is the realistic scenario.
Cylinder Deactivation
The rear bank shuts down when the bike is stationary, which is Ducati addressing the one complaint every big V-twin owner has made for thirty years. It works.
Sixty Thousand Kilometres Between Services
Abandoning desmodromic actuation on the Granturismo doubled the valve service interval, which for anyone using a Diavel the way it was meant to be used changes the ownership arithmetic completely. It is the least exciting and most consequential decision in the whole motorcycle.
