A Cup Bike With an Upgraded Brake
The R7's standard front brake is adequate and it is the first thing most owners improve, partly because racing regulations sometimes require better and partly because a single disc on a sports bike invites attention. Aftermarket radial cylinders frequently arrive with stepped clamp bolts.
Look, Do Not Assume
Offset means one bolt sits ahead of the other relative to the handlebar. Manufacturers change that spacing between generations of the same product, so establishing it from the bike rather than from a product name is the only reliable route.
Seventy-Three Horsepower on Purpose
Yamaha made no claim that the R7 would outrun an R6. It has a torquey 689 cc twin, a much stiffer front end than the MT-07 and a price that brought a proper sports bike back within reach of people who had been priced out of the class.
Where the Savings Show
The frame and the fork are good. The switchgear is shared with cheaper Yamahas and feels it from the saddle, which is why it is among the components owners replace once the suspension and brakes have been dealt with.
A Narrower Package
The dedicated offset drilling sits closer to the master cylinder than the universal plate. On a bar carrying a lever guard for track use, that space is worth having.
Four Anodised Finishes
Black, titanium, blue and red. Blue continues Yamaha's racing scheme where the bodywork carries it, and all four are surface conversions rather than coatings.
Sealed Construction
Elements sealed inside a body with no moulded seam. R7s commute during the week and race at weekends, and both halves of that are hard on switchgear in different ways.
