Replacing the 890
KTM took the LC8c to 947 cc for 2024 with a new frame, a longer swingarm and revised electronics. The 990 does not sit above the 890; it replaces it, and it makes more power than the outgoing 890 Duke R while being easier to ride.
A Hundred and Twenty-Three Horsepower
In a motorcycle positioned as the standard middleweight. KTM's habit of moving the class upward every few years has continued and most of the competition has stopped attempting to follow it directly.
An Electronics Suite From Above
Six-axis inertial measurement, cornering ABS, lean-sensitive traction control and a five-inch colour display, all navigated from the left cluster. It is the kind of package that belonged to litre bikes five years ago.
Small Buttons, No Fairing
The controls sit close together on a bike where the hands take the full airflow. The machined step between one and the next is what the thumb reads at speed, because printed legends cannot be seen with the eyes on the road.
A New Model
The 990 arrived in 2024 and very little has been made for it yet. Components engineered for the bike rather than adapted from the 890, which uses a different loom, are worth taking while the choice is limited.
Three Anodised Finishes
Black, titanium and orange, converted into the surface rather than applied over it. Each dulls with contact instead of chipping away to bright metal.
Sealed and One-Piece
Sealed contacts inside a body milled from a single block. No clipped joint to develop play under the twin's uneven firing and no seam for water to find.
