The JP ES 033 is the machined plate that blanks the PAIR ports on the FZ8's cylinder head.

The Mechanical Half
Disconnecting the solenoid stops the system electrically. This cover closes the passages in the head, which is what actually prevents air reaching the exhaust ports.
Supplied With a Gasket
Not an afterthought. The sealing face sits within centimetres of an exhaust port and a hand-applied bead of silicone hardens and fails within a season there.
Where the Popping Goes
Fresh air meeting unburnt fuel in a hot header is the noise riders blame on their exhaust. Close the passages and it stops without touching the fuelling.
A Shortened R1
Yamaha reduced the R1's stroke to reach 779 cc and softened the cams. The FZ8 is a smoother, more tractable version of a very good engine.
Overlooked When New
The FZ8 sat between the FZ6 and the FZ1 and cost about the same as both. It sold poorly and it is now one of the cheaper ways into a well-built Yamaha four.
Machined, Not Pressed
A cut plate holds its sealing face through the thermal cycling a cylinder head sees. A stamped cover distorts and eventually weeps at the joint.
Emissions Equipment
The PAIR system is part of the motorcycle's type approval. Removing it makes this a closed-circuit modification and the description says so.
Before Any Mapping
Oxygen injected after combustion makes the lambda sensor report a mixture that does not exist. Serious fuelling work starts with this system gone.
Nothing Permanent
The original cover and gasket refit at any point. The cylinder head itself is never modified.
An R1 With a Shorter Stroke
Yamaha reached 779 cc by reducing the stroke of the litre engine rather than by designing a new one. The result is smoother and more tractable than the R1 and it inherited the same reputation for lasting indefinitely.
