The Special Edition Z1000
Brembo M50 calipers, an Öhlins rear shock and different paint. Kawasaki assembled the parts owners were fitting anyway and sold them together.
Brembo M50
Monobloc calipers with a radial master cylinder, which transformed the front end of a motorcycle that had always braked adequately rather than well.
One Connector
Kawasaki's own plug, pre-wired, with nothing cut or spliced. The exchange takes roughly as long as finding the connector does.
The Filter Tells You
Pull the airbox lid on a high-mileage Kawasaki and the state of the element shows whether the reeds have been passing gas the wrong way. It is the cheapest diagnosis available.
A Very Common Complaint
Owners describe it as popping, backfiring or crackling, and it is the single most discussed characteristic of a modern Kawasaki four with an open pipe.
On a Bike With a Slip-On
Half the exhaust is still standard and the overrun is already louder than it was. The valve is the difference between a pleasant note and a constant crackle.
What Happens on a Trailing Throttle
The engine is still turning, the injectors have shut and unburnt mixture is being pushed into the header. Fresh air arriving there finds it and finishes the job at a temperature high enough to make the process audible from several metres away. Removing the air supply removes the reaction rather than muffling it.
Not a Restriction
Secondary air does not reduce power, choke the intake or soften the throttle. It operates only when the engine is not being asked for anything, which is why removing it changes the sound and nothing else at all. Anybody selling it as a performance part is misrepresenting what the system does and how it works.
A Sealed, Potted Body
The eliminator is filled rather than open, so the connector it occupies stays as protected from water and salt as it was with the original valve in place. That is not true of every improvised alternative.
